sounds like it youve got a bad sector on the harddrive you need to do a chkdsk /r from comand prompt you need a windows cd to do it

If the laptop has dropped, you have some kind of hardware damage. I highly recommend getting a new computer. Get an external enclosure for the hard drive in the laptop and use it to hook the old HDD to the new computer to transfer files and whatnot. You may be able to sell parts of the old laptop on eBay.
