First get the latest firmware upgrade for your device then follow the steps below...

To download photos from a Mac or Windows PC to iPod nano using a photo
application:
1 Open iTunes, select iPod nano in the iTunes Source list, and then click the Options
Click Photos and select “Synchronize photos from.”
â On a Mac, choose iPhoto from the pop-up menu.
â On a Windows PC, choose Photoshop Album or Photoshop Elements from the
pop-up menu.
3 If you want to import all of your photos, choose “Copy all photos.” If you want to
import photos only from certain albums or collections, choose “Copy selected albums
only” and select the albums or collections you want.
Note: Some versions of Photoshop Album and Photoshop Elements don’t support
collections. You can still use them to download all your photos.
Each time you connect iPod nano to your computer, photos are downloaded
automatically.
To download photos from a folder on your hard disk to iPod nano:
1 Drag the images you want into a folder on your computer.
If you want images to appear in separate photo albums on iPod nano, create folders
inside the main image folder, and drag images into the new folders.
2 Open iTunes, select iPod nano in the iTunes Source list, and then click the Options
button.
3 Click Photos and select “Synchronize photos from.”
4 Choose “Choose Folder” from the pop-up menu and select your image folder.
When you download photos to iPod nano, iTunes optimizes the photos for viewing.
Full-resolution image files aren’t transferred by default. Downloading full-resolution
image files is useful if you want to store your images or move them from one computer
to another, but is not necessary to view the images at full quality on iPod nano.

Downloaded music to itunes last night, when I tried to sync with ipod nano, it took ages, and then came up with error message on computer saying something like "cannot locate disk" and then I tried again...

It let you restore it and you still get "unable to sync as playlist on ipod has changed"? I think that the restore was an erase and install and complete re-Sync of it. I think you need to try the restore function again and make sure it completely re-syncs before trying to do anything with it.

You will need to replace the screen. This is a relatively cheap fix.

Is there a way to override or reset the password on the iPod Nano

Unfortunately, if the password has been forgotten, you will have to "Restore" the iPod, which will erase all the songs and other files that are currently on there.

To update or restore iPod nano:
1 Make sure you have an Internet connection and have installed the latest version of
iTunes from www.apple.com/ipod/start.
2 Connect iPod nano to your computer.
3 In iTunes, select iPod nano in the Source pane and click the Summary tab.
The Version section tells you whether iPod nano is up to date or needs a newer version
of the software.
4 Click Update to install the latest version of the software.
5 If necessary, click Restore to restore iPod nano to its original settings (this erases all data
from iPod nano). Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the restore process.

My nano won't restore.

Try putting the ipod in disk mode by pressing the center and play buttons after resetting it (by holding down the center and menu buttons). You will know it is in disk mode when it shows a check mark on the ipod screen. Then plug it into your vcomputer and format it using windows.

After you format the ipod, try disconnecting and reconnecting to the computer and restore and see if that fixes your problem.
