my neptune top-load will not drain and makes a grinding noise as it cycles

- Thank you Rich, I have a FA6800AW. The grinding noise happens only when the tumblers are rotating. Last night I took the clothes out and the machine drained. Then I put the clothes back in and ran the spin only cycle. The tub went crazy and I got a UC code. At that point I just turned off the machine. I plan to pull the front panel off and check the clutch assembly. Hope to hear back from you before then. Thanks

something is binding as its trying to cycle, you need to dissamble and look for any loose or broken parts or call a pro out to do this. dont want to allow this to happen has more damage or irrapairable damage could occur.

You are in the FAV6800AW forum. Is your machine model a FAV6800AW or FAV9800AW? If so I can help you DIY or give you enough info to control service cost.

Is the grinding noise you hear happening in the wash cycle only when the tumblers are rotating?

The fail to drain question related to the FAV6800AW or FAV9800AW, is this happening as you enter a spin cycle and do you error out with “dc” or “UC” error codes in spin cycle? If you machine type is the above I can help you, if you can confirm the model type Maytag TL.

Thank you… Rich aka dh1200s

- Hello drakar6,

For debris under the tumblers you will need to remove the tumbler caps (see page 37 of the SM) and using a #20 Torx driver the Service manual fails to mention the Torx driver size, remove the retaining screws and lift the tumblers out there may be some coins under the tumblers. Not sure if you have the SM it’s in the post in the next paragraph.

“” The tub went crazy and I got a UC code.”” For sure you have a Clutch malfunction. See this post I put together to help fellow owners. I recommend a replacement Clutch in the post. From what you described I would focus on the clutch we need to drop the clutch out of the machine and inspect the One-Way roller clutches(bearings). I don’t feel you will need to troubleshoot the Tub Displacement Sensor but here is a reference post just in case. TDS Troubleshooting. I would check out the TDS, it’s good practice for getting into Service Mode.

If you find the issue to be sticky/rusted One-Way roller clutches check the Clutch pulley hub and upper One-Way roller clutches ring if used on your machine. You could try the WD-40 clean up/re-lube and see if you can get back in service tonight. If they are beyond clean up I recommend a replacement clutch in that post.

I will help you thru the process. I’m only slightly mechanically handy, I’m a Eng. Electronics Technician by trade but I feel anyone with basic skill sets can repair anything on this machine. If you call in a repair service I think you will be looking at $300+ for a clutch replacement. I’ve been on this forum board since mid Dec 08. and have seen many of these $1K machine trashed when $10 investment in a can of WD-40 and some bearing grease or a $60 clutch replacement will get you back in service.

I’ll stick with you until problem is solved or you walk away from the machine. I have also offered phone support to forum members. This is often a better way for support.

I’m an owner not a repair person and I receive no compensation for my efforts. If you feel my post have helped out and once we get you back in service I would appreciate vote of confidence. Not sure who gave me two thumbs up. I do know the machine issues and repair process very well. Previous posted under dh1200s.

Good Luck and hope to see ya back in service real soon… My new profile name says it all…..FAV6800AWDIY….. Rich
