How to replace broken hinge on ADF on Brother MFC-8820D printer

In a post here, Soulvisitor gave a solution to someone else's problem that also helped me.  My Brother MFC-8820D is also showing "Doc. Cover Open" message in the LCD when it's first turned on. Pressing a small black lever at the back left side of the underside of the cover is the only thing that will clear the message, but, no matter what, the ADF will not work at all.  The problem seems to be due to a broken left-side hinge of the ADF.

Soulvisitor posted this photo of the replacement hinge that is needed:

I can easily order this part.  However, how would I install it?  From looking at my printer, it looks as if I would:

1) Lift the whole ADF off and out of the top of the flatbed casing. It looks like the ADF is just held in place by plastic "posts" that fit into the top of the case (?),

2) Unscrew and remove the broken hinge,

3) Screw in the replacement hinge,

4) Attach the ADF to the top of the flatbed casing by fitting the plastic posts back in their "sockets",

Can anyone tell me if this correct, and if there are any additional tips?  I've never made this type of repair before.

    Hi Soulvisitor,

Yes, my hinge installation was completely successful, and my ADF is back in good working order!

The new part arrived two days ago, and I installed it that evening.  Thanks for confirming the steps and giving me tips for the repair. I don't think I could have done this job without the information you gave here.

    Many thanks!

I'm ready to install a new hinge too. Thank you for the great instructions, now I feel comfortable tackling this project! My question is about the new hinge. I expected it would move up and down on the pin, but it doesn't. It looks like if I install it as is, the lid would be stuck in an open postition and not be able to close. Am I missing something, or is this a defective part, or should I be loosening it somehow? Thanks all

This is in response to momshelper's Feb. 4 post that says about the new part that "It doesn't move up or down on the pin. I'm afraid I'll install it and the lid will be stuck open. Do you think I could have a defective part or am I missing a step here?"

My new hinge assembly looked like it was "stuck open" when I got it, too.  If I tried to close the hinge with my hands, it didn't seem to bend at all.  Nevertheless, I proceeded with the installation.  Once the hinge was installed, it worked fine.

When I removed the old, broken hinge, it fell apart in my hands (just as Soulvisitor warned it might).  I could see there were stiff springs inside, which were perhaps what was making it seem impossible to bend the new hinge in my bare hands.  However, when the new hinge was installed, the springs flexed as expected.

Soulvisitor, who is the real expert, may be able to give a technical explanation for all this -- I'm just a novice! :)

Thanks so much for the information posted here. I was able to identify the specific problem, and the part required. I ordered from an eBay vendor for less than $20! My printer is up and running again, and so very thankfully without a service call!
    Thanks again

Can someone please help with this one?

I have a new hinge in my possession but when I try to remove the ADF, there is a post on the right side that will not allow me to lift the ADF off the printer. How can I install the new hinge and screws if I can't get the ADF all the way off for access?

Is there a way to get the hinge on the right to release?

  • Banjodude May 11, 2010

Soulvisitor, you are awesome! Hinge replacement took five minutes. Thanks to yumbrad for the low-cost link, too!

One note about installing the new screws is because the metal screws are attaching to plastic components, don't overtighten. I felt the center hinge screw starting to strip and the back screw on the passive hinge made a slight "crack" when bottoming out. Or, being a construction guy, I just don't know my own strength...

    Thanks, all

  • momshelper May 11, 2010

Barb, I bought the hinge and I'll ready to install. I have a question the new part. It doesn't move up or down on the pin. I'm afraid I'll install it and the lid will be stuck open. Do you think I could have a defective part or am I missing a step here? Thanks

Look at back of machine and at your new hinge, note the screw hole, if you undo both of those on the back of the printer, entire doc feed will come up and out, BECAREFULL just lift A LITTLE is enough to enable hinge base to be free of sockets (many cables attached) and place doc unit slightly sideways on copy glass to enable yourself access to 3 screws that hold hinge.

When you pull the doc feeder out the hinge that is broken may leak springs and bits but fear not for the bits cause you have the new one.

Thanks Soulvisitor, I was stymied on how to fix this without your tip. With a broken hinge my ADF didn't work and I was facing the neccessity of replacing my Brother MFC 98840D workhouse. This saved me at least $500. BTW I got my hinge off Ebay from Empire Office Machines for $11.50 shipped.

After replacing hinge on cover, Auto Documents will not feed on nMFC-8440

The new hinge part only appears to be stuck in the open position due to the spring tension needed in the assembly. the tension is used so that the lid wont seem as heavy to lift normally. hence, without the lid, it hinge by itself has no load and will just push itself open all the way. -- thx yumbrad for the low cost link to this hinge.

The flatbed lid on my 8820D has a broken hinge in the back. What are sources for the hardware parts so I can repair it myself?

I purchased a direct replacement from e_techparts on ebay for under $10 + S&H, very simple replacement, just a few screws. It's even available on Amazon. Part # LP2403001.

Brother 8820d MFC auto doc feeder does not work...

You need a new hinge so the cover will sit down properly, or paper will jam anyway, but it sounds like there is still a scrap of paper on one of the sensors inside the ADF, you need to look with a flashlight down thru where the paper goes and also look up thru the slot with the ADF lifted.

My printer says doc cover open on a mfc 8820d how should i fix.

You have to close the ADF. If the ADF is closed, then the left hinge is probably broken. Look for "MFC-8820D hinge" to find the solution in FixYa.

This is commonly a problem with the left hinge being broken on the lid where the adf is. Check that and if it is broken i can give you a part number.

Good luck!

8820DN hinge problem

To answer Meyerson's questions:
My symptoms did not include papers jamming in the ADF -- in fact, the ADF didn't work at all due to the broken left hinge.  :(  Also, I don't recall having any unusual problems with the ADF jamming frequently before the hinge broke to the point where the ADF didn't work at all.
I obtained the replacement ADF left hinge assembly by searching online for a parts dealer.  I believe I ended up ordering the part from Precision Roller.
I hope this helps,

Parts for Brother MFC 8200D

Yes, I had the same problem in Sept 2006 - a broken left hinge that needed fixing. Ordering the part was easy. I was able to install it myself, but it required some attention to detail.

I called Brother International at 800-284-4357, Option 1, then 2. I ordered the left hinge - Part No: LP-2403001 - described as ADF Hinge Assembly (left). If you broke the right hinge, the part number may differ slightly, but person on phone should be able to assist. It cost me $11.55 including shipping.
