It started when I downloaded Internet Explorer 8. Then the HP Directer window messed up. Then it started putting me into safe mode.

Suggest you uninstall IE8 --- Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, View Installed Updates (on left side of screen), look for IE8 in the list and uninstall the update. It sits below Silverlight on the list. (My system doesn't much care for IE8 either.) The previous version of IE will be restored automatically.
