Maytag Performa PAV2300 washer: unbalanced spin

Maytag Performa PAV2300 washer: regularly becomes unbalanced during spin cycle. It noisily "ka-chunks" its way across the laundry room floor - presumably because the "unbalanced spin load compensator" allows it to continue to spin. The clothes are usually well-balanced in the drum but the drum looks like it is spinning out of control. Is the "load compensator" something that can get broken and require repair? One repairman told me this particular Maytag model "does that all the time and there's nothing you can do to fix it"
