Hi. I recently bought a hard drive enclosure from CompUSA for about $20, only to find that it's a piece of ****, since the moment i plugged in the AC adapter, I saw a flash inside the adapter and also heard a popping noise. For reference, the enclosure's product code is ECS-U35K, and can be seen here: http://www.compusa.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=1733195&sku=M501-1182&srkey=ECS-U35K
Upon further research and frustration of not having the external drive I'd been awaiting to finally use, I found that many other people also called this thing a total piece of **** as well. However, being a rather curious person, I opened the casing on the adapter to identify what went wrong, and, lo & behold, I found the source of the flash & "pop": there was a fuse wired into the circuitry, near the power cord inlet. I know a couple things about electronics, and I look further to see if anything else was wrong, and also discovered that there was also a capacitor missing. Whether these 2 are related, though, I'm not experienced enough to know, and would very much appreciate if someone can guide me to what I can solder, remove, desolder, ect. to fix the stupid adapter. Sadly, money is tight, so that's why i would rather fix than buy one new. Can anyone help me? Also to note: the adapter goes from a Type B power cord (120V AC) to a IEC C13 female plug, which connects to a IEC C14 male inlet plug on the adapter module. From there, it runs through the circuitry, and goes out to a 6-pin Mini-DIN plug(same plug used for serial desktop mice, otherwise known as PS/2 mouse), which provides the hard drive enclosure circuit board and hard drive power in +5V DC & +12V DC, with the bottom 2 pins acting as ground lines. I can supply anyone who can help me photos for reference to everything I just said...I think. I can take photos of the adapter's innards, as well. Thank you in advance.
