I was really glad to find this article . I did some hobby electronics as a (german) radioamateur years ago... and have forgotten a lot. But still able to hold a soldering iron and use a multimeter... I tried:
    I have a DELL 173 FPb monitor.
I replaced the two transistors C5707 ... the monitor worked... and an hour later it I had the problem again: Green light on, screen dark after 4 seconds. Diagnosis: The substituted two C5707 failed again. In fact, both had a shortcut.

Before substituting them again, I would kindly ask your advice concerning the hfe-problem:

Is it a good plan to substitute all four C5707 transistors (hoping they have nearly identical hfe values) with transistors I can get at a local store... or would I have to try to get them from DELL (hoping they have "better" hfe values. At a first phone call in Germany, DELL didn't want to deliver the transistors to me as a private person.

About the capacitors: Could you give me a hint which capacitors are suspect to fail and are maybe to be replaced even if they still seem OK? Where are they situated on the board ( part number?). I have only a good digital multimeter available, no meter to measure capacitance.

    Best regards, Martin

I have the same problem and when I checked out the lcdrepair.com link it states:

Bad Inverter Board Symptom: No Display ( No Picture) on screen but Power Indicate light stays on green.
    Or Screen Flickering.
Bad Power Supply Symptom: NO POWER, No Indicator lights are green on front panel.

So it is clearly not a bad power supply as it starts up ok. So from the above choices it indicates bad inverter but I wonder if it is more a logic problem considering it starts up as normal and then drops out? after about 30 secs.

I have a dell F172FP monitor, light is green, monitor is black. It started by flickering and you could move it around and it would come on and work. But, now it is just black. Comes on for about l second, then goes black. It is 5 years old. HELP

These monitors are a pain to open up. The inverter circuit for the backlight is on the right side of the monitor when veiwed from the front, part is c5707(marked) or 2sc5707(actual part number) around $1, there are 4 of them, one or 2 usually fail. Sometimes this failure can cause damage to one or more of the corresponding transformers which can can be visibly be seen affecting(melted) the yellow wrap. Be sure to check for dry joints around the affected area as the boards are very badly made, primarily around these transistors and transformers or the fault could reoccur soon after the repair. The same fault occurs in the dell 19", part number is 2sc5706. I hope this helps you out.

I found one of these monitors in the trash, it came on with no picture the light was green, I found out it was the control voltage for the HV power supply, I tore apart an old VCR salvaged a PNP transitor and a resistor and hotwired it, the only downfall is the brightness doesn't adjust but I assume the resistor value would have affected the brightness, if I needed it brighter.

Check out this link http://www.lcdrepair.us/Installation.html
There are instruction videos and manuals for that unit. They also sell a kit or the whole board.

I used a company that sells the entire inverter board at a very reasonable price. I installed a new board and then shipped my old one bad and had it repaired for a backup. Here's the web site;

These guys are great.

Computer monitor all black but power is on.

Check to see that monitor is turned on, power cord is connected. Check to see that video cable is connected to computer. Verify that monitor's power light is on.
If it's still black with power on, you may have settings that have to be changed on the monitor.

Describe your Dell E173FP 17" LCD Monitor Problem The monitor seems to be turning itself repeatedly on and off. No picture is ever seen, the screen stays black with a slight flicker.

Sounds like the monitor is cycling power.
Try plugging the monitor into a different power socket. Try not to use the same power bar as your computer

I have a problem with a Dell e173fp monitor. On power up, the power LED goes green and screen flashes on once very dimmly, then goes black.

Look for shorted out transistors (4) (c5706/5707) in the inverter circuits, this is common problem, post back what you see so we can guide you further.

Monitor Screen goes black seconds after turn on-

I ended up fixing my problem, but I'm not sure what the solution is. I had some faulty electrical equipment that I was using to power the monitor (220V to 110V converter and a bad power strip) and I got rid of them. I was using the converter because I moved to Israel and I thought I needed to feed the monitor only 110V, but I now realize that the power cord for the monitor has a built-in converter that accepts 220V input. Now the monitor is plugged directly into the wall and is working fine. Try using a different power source (maybe the wiring or plug you're using is faulty). Good Luck!

Monitor flashes on and off!

Sounds like you have a bad connection from your monitor to your computer. First check and make sure the connection between them is tight. Does your computer boot up and run though? If your computer is not booting up the monitor will default back to the flashing green power light

Dell E173FP - After sometime the screen switches off

Sorry not a solution - but I have started experiencing the exact same problem over the last month although sometimes, on switching on again, it will run for 10-15 minutes before the problem re-emerges. Initially I put it down to the v. hot weather in July but it still continues. So I would also appreciate any solutions!
