I plugged the device in to charge and when I returned from dinner it didn't work, at all. The screen wouldn't turn on, the blue ring didn't light up, and it wouldn't register as being plugged into my computer.

You may need to reset the Sansa by powering it off and then taking out the battery for two minutes and then put it back in and repower.
