What you are probably experiencing is a driver problem related to the OS, not to the Acer hardware. Try using the System Restore Utility (Programs > Accessories > System Utilities) and restore to a point BEFORE the malfunction. Also, just in case, run a virus check before doing the restore.
If it doesn't work, try uninstalling the driver for the DVD, then reboot and wait for the DVD to be automatically detected again. This should lead to the correct drivers being extracted from the driver repository.
A last chance, for it is likely to mess up some other features of the system, is to run System File Checker (Start > Run > type "SFC /SCANNOW" and hit OK). I'd do that only as a very last resort, and I would run a System Restore immediately before, to create a save point to which return in case it doesn't work.
