Question about Sony Handycam DCR-HC21 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

1 Answer

LCD screen stopped working

Hi,

Over the past couple of weeks a few things have started to go wrong with the LCD screen on my handycam. Otherwise, it works fine. It's approximately 2 years old, and is actually a DCR-HC21E (with an E).
First, the record button on the screen stopped working, although the physical button on the back still works. Then the screen became yellow-tinged. And yesterday the screen stopped working altogether, i.e. it remains blank. You can still use the viewfinder though, and the camera still records fine.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Hi, I have the same problem. I bought the camera about 2 years ago and used it a lot, though have looked after it well and havent dropped it or damaged it. The screen suddenly stopped working about six months ago, I was using it, turned it off to change tapes, then turned it back on and....nothing! The touch screen still works when in playback mode, although you can't see the buttons, you hear the response sound when you touch the appropriate part of the screen. Apart from that, it's just dead. This seems to be a common problem with the handycams, from Googling I gather that Sony was offering repairs a few years back with some of the handycam models, but I couldnt find out if they still are, or if they are only offering the repair in certain countries.

Thanks. That's good to know. We could keep using the video as it was, but it's gotten worse since - the video footage is over-exposed too.

Is it worth trying to repair these things? Typically repairs seem to be more expensive than a new camera...

I have the exact same problem & i own a Sony HC21 (without a E). First the record button stopped working & then the screen went blank.

Like the other guest said, the touch screen button seem to work fine when in play mode. And what we have recorded plays fine on the TV which means CCD is fine.

I had called sony support, they said it would cost be 220$+ for the repair with 90 day labor parts warranty as it is more than 1 year since i bought the camera. A new camcorder of HC2X series is 250$.

If it is under 1 year sony willl repair for free for you. Call them a check.

I live in San Jose, California, if any one is willing to repair or have suggestions pls post your reply & i will contact you.

Sounds like the LCD screen viewfinder may have been twisted or accidentally catched or got hooked or snagged on on something at one stage and pulled something, if the screen went yellow it means the three wires going to it are possibly broken or the small white clip was slowly coming undone inside the Viewfinder for the red and green to no longer work to complete the image also indicates why the buttons on the viewfinder are not responding, try twisting the viewfinder very lightly whilst on, but most likely the small white clip holding the wires has come off at the elbow inside the camera

SOURCE: Sony TRV-19 Camcorder - Black screen in camera mode

Fixed it, at least temporarily I had the side off my trv250 examining it, especially the CCD connection. I had read the post about soldering a capacitor to pins 1 and 3 (from the left) on the bottom row. I didn't have the specific capacitor on hand, but I started touching some of the small ones I did have to those pins. I found that after I touched a 100uF, 10V cap to pins 1 and 3 the picture suddenly came back to life and stayed that way after removing the cap. I have no idea how long this will last, and I've set up the cam on a tripod in the livingroom with the LCD display facing me so I can monitor it. If you, like me, figure you have nothing else to lose, you might want to give this a try. Note: my camera was suffering from the green smeary horizontal lines problem, and wasn't completely black. I'm not sure if this makes a difference or not.

SOURCE: Title - Hi

I have the same problem - LCD is black for playback and recording, but touch screen buttons respond (just you can't see them) if you guess where they are. Viewfinder is fine for recording and playback.. Have contacted Sony UK via email (awaiting repsonse) and also spoke to them. The problem with the CCD where Sony are fixing (until Sept 08) for free is slightly different to this, and the girl I spoke to said that the DCR-HC42E is not a camera on their list for the free repairs as it is not a recognised fault with the camera. Only option I have been given is to send to their service centre at a cost of £175. Am going to complain further and will post updates. Suggest that anyone with this problem contacts Sony - http://support.sony-europe.com/contacts/contacts.aspx?l=en&tp=cic

Sony HDR-HC3 LCD touchscreen blacked-out.

Hi, I have the same Problem with my HC3. This July the screen started to go funny and then now only works once its fully opend and flipped against the body. the touch screen did not work, As I had tapes to be transfered I needed to get the camera in to play mode and access the menu. I had no choice but to gentnly removed the LCD cover and tightend the connections and the touch screen now started to work. As I move the creen forward the image goes off and once? Looks like its a common problem as I see many having thesame issue. I feel it could be a loose connection inside but cant open and loose whats left working as it is still usable without the screen.
Thanks

Cracked LCD Screen

I had one broken a few months ago. I got a couple quotes.. it was about $200 less then a brand new one. I'd just buy a new one.
For the new TV I'd pickup a screen protector for it. My son threw a toy at my TV the other day and I nearly had a heart attack from the flashbacks. Thank God I picked up one of these a few weeks earlier. It stopped it. LCD screens really break easily as you know. http://www.tv-armor.com
