Question about Sony Handycam DCR-HC21 Mini DV Digital Camcorder
Over the past couple of weeks a few things have started to go wrong with the LCD screen on my handycam. Otherwise, it works fine. It's approximately 2 years old, and is actually a DCR-HC21E (with an E).
First, the record button on the screen stopped working, although the physical button on the back still works. Then the screen became yellow-tinged. And yesterday the screen stopped working altogether, i.e. it remains blank. You can still use the viewfinder though, and the camera still records fine.
Sounds like the LCD screen viewfinder may have been twisted or accidentally catched or got hooked or snagged on on something at one stage and pulled something, if the screen went yellow it means the three wires going to it are possibly broken or the small white clip was slowly coming undone inside the Viewfinder for the red and green to no longer work to complete the image also indicates why the buttons on the viewfinder are not responding, try twisting the viewfinder very lightly whilst on, but most likely the small white clip holding the wires has come off at the elbow inside the camera

Fixed it, at least temporarily I had the side off my trv250 examining it, especially the CCD connection. I had read the post about soldering a capacitor to pins 1 and 3 (from the left) on the bottom row. I didn't have the specific capacitor on hand, but I started touching some of the small ones I did have to those pins. I found that after I touched a 100uF, 10V cap to pins 1 and 3 the picture suddenly came back to life and stayed that way after removing the cap. I have no idea how long this will last, and I've set up the cam on a tripod in the livingroom with the LCD display facing me so I can monitor it. If you, like me, figure you have nothing else to lose, you might want to give this a try. Note: my camera was suffering from the green smeary horizontal lines problem, and wasn't completely black. I'm not sure if this makes a difference or not.

SOURCE: Title - Hi
I have the same problem - LCD is black for playback and recording, but touch screen buttons respond (just you can't see them) if you guess where they are. Viewfinder is fine for recording and playback.. Have contacted Sony UK via email (awaiting repsonse) and also spoke to them. The problem with the CCD where Sony are fixing (until Sept 08) for free is slightly different to this, and the girl I spoke to said that the DCR-HC42E is not a camera on their list for the free repairs as it is not a recognised fault with the camera. Only option I have been given is to send to their service centre at a cost of £175. Am going to complain further and will post updates. Suggest that anyone with this problem contacts Sony - http://support.sony-europe.com/contacts/contacts.aspx?l=en&tp=cic
