Question about Toshiba gigabeat MES60VK Digital Media Player

4 Answers

Doesn't work without cord! Battery switch is not responding at all.

To operate the unit .....I have to have it "warm up" with that damn "GIGABEAT" screen and if unplugs at all during use...BAM it turns off.

The word portable no longer applies to my beloved Gigabeat MES60VK.

Help!!!!

    Thanks Playtack....

Seems you and I are in the EXACT same boat. I appreciate javc 86's suggestion .....but you and I know the battery switch is not the issue.

    What are we gonna do???

Good luck to us both brother.

I just saw Kush's problem. I recently posted a similar problem. I can plug my MES60V in with AC power cord, then Gigabeat boot screen appears, then it works fine. Unplug it from AC and it turns off immediately.

But it will NOT work on battery power nor will it recognize a USB connection.

I do know about the battery reset switch and that is not the problem, unless perhaps the switch is broken. It's definitely set to the correct orientation though.

Any ideas?? The only things I can think of are the battery is totally fried or the battery switch is broken internally. It's weird though; the battery was holding its charge just fine recently.

Identical problem - working only with power cord.
Wont power on battery or usb cable.

I actually opened player and check every single option.
(I am experienced electronic - tech.)
Result: battery is fully charged (768 mA/ 3.97V on bench)
Battery switch on bottom fully functional. (switching on/off 3.97V
comming from battery)
USB supply 5.0 V in perfect order.
Conclusion:
There is no "EASY" fix for this problem.
It is either problem with firmware (low possibility)
or semiconductor on logic board (practically not fixable on DIY basis)

I bought my Gigabeat 60Gb for $ 70.00 used on Ebay so
I will live with this problem.

I called Toshiba and the suggested:

1) Unplug the unit from power
2) Switch battery to off
3) Plug power back in and turn on
4) Get to the options screen
5) Switch the unit off (with button)
6) Flip battery switch to on.

This didnt work for me, but the Toshiba guy that this resets the battery. I got an estimate on service and they want a $160 flat fee, no matter if it's a battery problem or whatever.

Forre1e had a similar problem with his. Maybe we are noticing a trend with these. Doesn't help that not a lot of ppl have this unit (which is awesome and stomps all over ipod's face, BTW).

I bought mine refurb(roxor!) from w00t.

There's a "hidden" switch on the lower part that makes it not use the battery. You can switch it with a pencil or pen.

MES60VK Gigabeat - Dead

There is a switch on the bottom left side of the dock connector of the player. Flick the switch to the right and it should work. The switch is the battery cutoff switch. It is there so it will charge only. I have no idea why Toshiba though this was a good idea, but they put it there.

Gigabeat Will Not Turn On - Battery Flashes Then Goes Dead

have you only been charging it with the usb cable?
try plugging it into a ac adaptor, (make sure the button is in the off position at the bottom)
and it should hopefully restart, then turn it to the on when it's loaded, and leave it plugged in till it's completely charged

that might work

Gigabeat frozen!

Hi Lorna, Yeah I found my Gigabeat froze a few different times when I was getting used to it. Solution: at the bottom of player there is a little battery on/off switch - its tiny and black but you would have needed to switch it on to first use it. Well turn it off here for 10 seconds and the on again. This removes all power from the hard drive and circuits which occassionally freeze. Hope that helps

Gigabeat 40GB screen frozen

well, it would be really easy to take off the battery. The battery is simply plugued with a little 3-pin wire, u just pull on it and put it back in. Now to open that gigabeat, its pretty easy. I even got some images for u. Go at this website (its for the F10 and u have the F40, but its the same thing): http://www.angelfire.com/bug2/gigabeat/
