my dell dimension 5100 will not power up . This has been a recurrent problem since it was new. In the past, I just kept pushing the button and after several hundred attempts, it would finally turn on. This time, the power went off and I have not been able to get it to turn on since. Because of the past issues, I always have left the CPU on. I tried talking to DEll with no success whatsoever.
HELLO THERE: The first thing you should do is to see of the power supply is working or not if not replace it if it is and you are sure that it is than i would open the case and make sure that all connections are tight by pressing firmly on all of them If still nothing unplug the harddrive and the cd rom from the motherboard and see if it will power up now if so reconnect the harddrive and see if it will now boot if not check the flat ribbon cable to see if it is damaged or is not connected fully than repete these steps for the cd rom ok? try each one seperatly to see how this works if it is now than you know what is wrong ok if not leave the harddrive and the cd rom dissconnected from the motherboard than unplug the powersupply cord that goes to the motherboard and press the power button for 10 seconds and than press in the reset button if you have one for 15 seconds now plug in the cord from the power supply back into the motherboard and turn on the computer it should now at least come on if still nothing your board may have failed or your power switch may be faulty ok I hope that this hass been very helpfull for you best regards michael
First and foremost, since "this has been a recurring problem since it was new," is it still under warranty? That's the simple solution. My next step personally would be to unplug everything from it, and VERY CAREFULLY re-seat all cables you can see and the RAM as well, but only if you are comfortable doing so. The parts of a PC can be very fragile.

I CAN play MP3s and CDs and hear the music on my myspace page when it loads. I can hear music on other people's myspace pages when it's imbedded into the page as an mp3; however I cannot hear the music on peoples Myspace Music Players. This started late yesterday afternoon and of course I presumed this to be a myspace problem and didn't give it much thought. When I turned on the computer today something visually went by fast (maybe a small gray java window) like it was installing something (maybe windows haha) but it may have said Windows Media Player. When it finally came up I opened Windows Media Player and tried to play an MP3 and it said I was missing a codec and provided a proper link. I clicked on the link and immediately got the codec and now the MP3s play. But still Myspace Music Players don't play. Here is the bad part that made me realize it wasn't a myspace problem. My midi files do not play nor do any of my webpages play the midi files on them. The only change I made was yesterday I deleted X-Vid codecs that I had downloaded months ago and did not use. I used add/remove programs and removed X-Vid. Anyway I did a full Nortons scan and was clean. Then I ran a full Ad Aware Scan, and ran CCleaner as well and nothing is very wrong with my system other than no sound with midis. I finally decided to do a full system restore to yesterday that failed as it said I had made no changes. Then I tried a system restore to last Sunday and it said there were no changes made and so no restore would be made. So it probably wasn't the X-Vid delete that caused the problem. In troubleshooting in Device Manager I tried to update ALL the audio drivers and it said I had the best (latest)version of all the drivers. I clicked on everything individually and then ran the troubleshooters which took forever. I have no yellow exclamation points and it says all things are working properly. except for one thing. when I click on Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device it says this device is working properly. When I click on properties and then again on the tab that says properties and then on the words Modem Wave Driver it says Status:Driver is enabled but not functioning properly. Yet previously (higher up) it said it was fine. (this is device 5.3.2600.2180) Also if I click on Control Panel, Sounds and audio devices, sounds tab.... and click on a sound.... it used to let you preview the sound but now the tab is gray. I don't know what to do next. If my sound card was unseated my mp3s wouldn't play. I have rebooted several times. I have tried reading Dell forums (I have a Dimension 5100) and I have read forums for Unimodem half-duplex audio device and forums for Sigma tel High definition audio codecs although that one says its working properly. Since it seems to only be Midis affected and it is called a Modem Wave Driver, could the dial up modem be unseated? could it be that simple?
