Maybe you are using a serial-to-usb converter cable and you havn't installed the drivers for that. It should be some sort of mini-cd in the box.
If not, then you need to provide more information so people can help.

Check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red white green black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems to a computer and its parts Check if USB Ports Are Damaged

USB ports are an important part of your computer's hardware.
Many devices connect to the computer via USB, such as music players, cell phones and digital cameras.
This connection lets you charge your devices and manage files on them.
When you connect a device to a USB port, it is typically recognized automatically.
If not, there may be a problem with the port. USB ports sometimes fail on their own, or they may be damaged by force.

Plug a variety of devices into the USB port you think is damaged.
If none of them work, the port is probably broken.
Connect the same devices to the USB ports on a different computer.
If they work, this is another indication your ports may be damaged.
Run Windows Update on your computer to ensure your devices and computer function together and have the latest drivers.
Click "Start," then type "Update" in the search bar.
Click on "Windows Update," "Check for Updates" and "Install Updates."

Open the Windows Device Manager by clicking "Start," then typing "device manager" into the search bar.
Click the Device Manager link when it appears.
Click on each of your USB ports.
In the Properties window, look for "This device is working properly."
If this is displayed for each USB port, they are not damaged, but there may be a problem with your device instead.
Click "Update Driver" next to each USB port in the Device Manager, and Windows searches for and installs the latest driver.
If one can't be found, go to your computer manufacturer's website, and download the driver there. Try to use the USB port again.
Sometimes, outdated or damaged drivers result in a non-working USB port.

Open your computer case by unscrewing or sliding off the side cover.
Use a can of compressed air to clean out the dust from inside, especially from within the USB ports.
If your USB ports are hooked up to the motherboard, remove the cable, then replace it.
These actions sometimes help to fix non-working ports.

HP s7700n - all USB ports have stopped working. Device Manager shows drivers are okay. I'm thinking the bridge chip on the motherboard has failed. Any other ideas?

Try to to refresh USB ports.

1. Right-click My Computer icon on the desktop, and then select Properties.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Click the Device Manager button.
4. Click the plus (+) sign to the left of Universal Serial Bus controllers.
5. Right-click the device listed under Universal Serial Bus controller and select Uninstall.
6. Click OK to confirm the removal of the device.

Please note, repeat Steps 5 and 6 until all the devices under Universal Serial Bus Controller are removed.

7. Shut down the computer.

CAUTION: Ensure that the Shut Down option is selected, instead of the Restart option.

8. Wait for 5 seconds and then restart the computer. When the computer restarts, a "Windows has detected new or added hardware" message window will open.

The above steps will refresh the USB ports.

Now connect the USB devices like mouse, video camera, your external usb hard disk...usb hubs...whatever you like and the drivers should install automatically.

Tip: It is always recommended to connect the main usb devices at the rear end usb port, as they require more power to initiate.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response

Thanks, Joe

I need a diagnostic tool for RAID falure code 0. Initial boot indicates degraded condition. DISK scan does not seem to remedy the issue. Did the drive actuually fail? Is there a fix? Primary disk still...

It looks like you have two arrays here. The first one being a mirrored RAID array and has only one disk. This means that the other disk has failed in some sort. This does not mean that the drive is bad, just the RAID failed for some reason. You will need to rebuild the RAID if you want to maintain the same level of redundancy.

You can just attempt a rebuild the RAID to the same drives but if this fails you will want to replace the bad drive. In order to do this you will need to make sure you can tell which drive is which. You do not want to mirror the bad drive to the good one.

If attempting a rebuild to the existing drive does not work or is not an option (because the failed drive could really be bad), you will need to determine which physical drive needs to be replaced. You may be able to hot-swap the drive but if you can power things down, that is always safest. Once the new drive is installed, you can rebuild to it and all should be well after that.

Com.port failed

Download and install the latest proper driver for the TU-S9 cable.

Also, are yo sure that this mysterious "external serial device" is working properly, or is even compatible with the computer?

Last but not least, you could buy and install a PCI serial port card...

Comm 1/ no serial ports not responding.

Ok, if the hard drive already had Windows XP on it, it has the configuration for the computer it came out of.  you need to reinstall windows xp with the hard drive in your computer so it can properly detect all the ports that your computer has.

Printer will not print.

Printer does not printIf the printer is sitting idle and there is no output, check the following:

  1. Make sure that the printer has power.
  2. Check that the printer is not out of paper, ink, or toner and that it is not in an error state.
  3. Verify that the printer hardware is working before continuing. Run a self-test (refer to the printer manual for instructions).
  4. Check the printer cable and make sure that it is attached properly to the port and the printer. Refer to your printer documentation.
  5. If the printer is a serial printer, make sure that the baud rate at which the computer sends data to the printer matches the printer's baud rate. For instructions on how to reset the baud rate, see ``Printer output is illegible''.
  6. Make sure that the printer is enabled and accepting jobs. See ``Enabling and disabling printers'' and ``Accepting or rejecting print jobs''.
  7. Verify that the system has the port configured properly. See ``Port does not respond'' for more information.
  8. Make sure that the port is configured for the proper interrupt vector and that no other hardware is using that interrupt vector. See ``Interrupt vectors'' for more information. See your hardware documentation for information on configuring your ports.
  9. Test the printer port connection by redirecting the output of a command directly to the device.

Pixma530 printer where inside is thhe serial number?

Go to
and type in serial number. The first result shows you exact instructions for finding the number. This assumes that your model is a Pixma MP530 - the only 530 in the Pixma line that I could find. The content of that page appears below (illustrations will likely not appear properly):
Locate the Serial Number The serial number of the PIXMA MP530 is located inside the printer, as shown below.
  1. Lift the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) until it locks into place.

  2. When the printer is powered on and the Scanning Unit is lifted, the Paper Output Tray will open automatically. If the Paper Output Tray does not open after several seconds, press the Open button to open the tray manually.

  3. Open the Inner Cover.
The serial number is attached to the back wall inside the printer.
It starts with four letters (AAGA) and ends with five numbers. Example: AAGA01234
