it will charge while in the off position, providing there is power to it via the usb cable,car charger or home charger.

you can tell the status of the battery by starting the 660 and hit ok on the agreement page then you should be in the main menu...the battery should be at the top right of the screen showing the state of the battery..all green means fully charge. the satiellites are to the top left.
