I bought it two weeks ago from one owner. He never used internal speakers. Now when I turn on the tv after it has been turned off for a while, the sound has lots of static and eventualy goes out. I unplug and plug back and forth for about a half hour till it comes back in with static and eventually the static goes away.
This model uses a single "Surround/Sound" circuit board. All of them go bad---probably why he was using a surround sound system for the audio.
Board part number is: X480242 and it is no longer available from Hitachi---the only way you can get it fixed is to remove the board in the set and have it sent out for rebuild--company is PTS electronics--they repair/rebuild all kinds of boards.
Considering the cost for repair/rebuild is almost 200 dollars it may be smarter just to do what the other person did--get an inexpensive surround sound and get the audio that way.
I worked on a lot of these sets with this problem--some brand new ones were bad this way--
With the back off of the set you will see on the far left wall (as you look from the back) the Surround board--it is not hard to remove (several plugs and a few screws).
This was in my view a design flaw--the board is full of surface mounted IC chips and several are mounted near the audio output IC---heat from the output chip over time causes all kinds of bad solder connections.
I saw one tech in a shop where I worked spend three hours trying to resolder one of these boards (special soldering for surface mounted parts etc) and the board still did not work right.
That board got sent out for rebuild and worked fine after. Lots of these have problems where when cold or hot sound problems come or go.

My Hitachi dinosaur television picture goes off and on for no reason. It goes to a complete black screen and then comes back on. It does this periodically. Do you have any ideas? Is this major? Should we just buy a new one. We love this one the picture is beautiful.. We thought it was our satellite system until we hooked up another television to the system.. So now we know it is our television. Oh, and the television shows it is on when the picture disappears. Their is no sound either..just a black screen. No error messages or anything like that. At times it does it when a commercial comes on, then comes back on after the commercial is over.

intermittent sound loss on both internal and external channels. The sound works for a while and then just cuts out. Sometimes it comes back when changing between sources; sometimes it does not return until the TV is shut down for an hour or so. Sound usually comes on when TV is first turned on - but not every time. The time before it disappears is random, but it always occurs eventually.

i have a hitachi dlp television model/serial 61swx10b The sound has slowly began to come and go at random, and at this point will not come back on at all. I only have a dvd player hooked up right now (no cable yet just moved into house) so cannot tell if it is dvd player, however, used to work just fine. only thing i have tried is switching audio inputs (with no luck) and also the sound from my dvd player works fine on my older tube television. If the speakers are blown out (if that is the problem), will a surround sound restore sound. Some insight would be fantastic, Thank you
