Can you ping the routers gateway? At the command prompt (in XP - Press Star, click on Run, type the letters cmd and press OK). Type in ipconfig /all Look up your default gateway Type in ping 192.168.1.1(whatever your gateway number) Is it coming back with a reply?

Enter IPCONFIG/ALL and press ENTER
Does your IP-address start with '169.254.xxx.yyy' or with '192.168.aa.bb' ?
Do you have any "firewall" software installed? (Zonalarm? Comodo Firewall?)
