Sustaining a connection

Ever since i got the wireless router with my laptop from dell i have had some minor connection problems. however in recent months every device that tries to connect to the internet through the router cannot stay connected. my laptop has windows vista home premimum and i have an xbox 360(wireless) and an old dell from 2001. i have manually tried to improve it but i cannot get my devices to sustain a connection for any large amount of time without manually going downstairs and resetting the modem and the router. even then it doesnt always reconnect. i just cant stand it anymore. my parents are even thinking about getting a new internet service but i think its the router. please help.

Since this problem happens with all devices -- and they are probably located in various places -- that rules out either the devices or physical problems (like long distances between the device and the router or thick walls). You're probably right that it is a problem on the router end of the connection.

You should definitely try replacing the router before changing the internet connection, but before you do that, you should try to see if your outages correspond to the use of either a cordless phone or microwave oven -- both of those emit radio waves on a frequency close to wireless routers. Next time you lose a connection, see if anyone's on the phone.

If that's your problem, then changing your router (or your internet service provider) won't fix it. You can switch from a 2.4 Ghz cordless phone to a 5.8 Ghz model to avoid interference. Or switch back to ethernet cables.

Your issue, of course, may be elsewhere, but I have known a number of folks whose intermittent connection problems were due to cordless phones.

Laptop wont connect to Di-614+

Since the Dell connects somewhere else, you know its wireless stuff is working. You may have signal issues at home, either low strength or interference. Try repositioning the router. Change its channel through the router setup page to see if that helps. Also be sure you have your security settings right in the laptop. This should get you going.

I have a dell inspiron1300 laptop pc.This problem has just developed. When I turn on it won't connect to the internet(wireless connection) until I click ''repair'' on the small connection icon at the bottom...

This can happen when both the wireless router and the laptop are powered up together. The laptop boots up before the wireless router can issue the laptop with an IP address. When you click Repair the LAN card requests a new IP address from the router and then the laptop can connect to the Internet.

I get this problem sometimes and then I have to click Repair.

Try leaving the wireless router powered up or power up the wireless router first. I suggest rebooting the wireless router approx. once a week, the wireless router will then be issued with a new IP address from your ISP, this makes it difficult for hackers to hack into your wireless router/network.

Cannot sustain network or internet connection

It is quite possible that your issue is due to the DHCP function of your router. I would check the DHCP settings and the lease time that is set. Its quite possible that the lease time is running out and its having difficulty renewing a new IP.
