Hello I have the HP Officejet 5610 All-in-One fax/scanner. I have a Cartridge Error and clean the ink heads on the color and black ink but sill have the error. I then replaced the black ink and error still appears. Please advise what I can do to resolve. Tks! Daniel

- Hi Don, Thanks for your time and advice. The black ink is a new HP cartridge (not original one) that I just put in. The color one is original to the fax. Do you think if I replace the color one it may solve the issue as I'm still getting the error. tks! Daniel

Hi daniel70,

I see that you have put in a new cartridge. Probably worth a shot to get some high quality rubbing alcohol and Q-tips then clean the contact (copper) points in the cartridge slot and on the cartridge.

To do this:

1. Power up the printer
2. Open the cartridge access door on the front right of the printer

The printer will move the cartridge holder assembly to the open-door section where you can get at it.

3, Then, unplug your printer. This protects the unit as you clean the internal contacts.

4. remove the black cartridge and look inside the printer at the cartridge holder slot with a strong flashlight. You will see contact points inside. Clean these with a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip and blow the contacts dry.

5. You should also clean the back of the cartridge and make sure that the protective cover (supplied with the new cartridge) has been completely removed. Also, make sure it is dry before you put it back in the printer. Make sure it "snaps" in place as well.

Just a note that you can refill these cartridges many times with no issue and there is no restriction in this printer that prevents you from doing so (my black cartridge has been filled eight times). You can see my tip on this at:

Are you using a factory new ink cartridge?
Then your ink cartridges are replaceable under the product warranty.
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridge that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead.
