9 out of 10 times when the fat ps2 cant/wont read disk its the cd tray needs to be adjusted.
I would suggest opening up the ps2 and cleaning the console with Qtips and rubing alcohol. if the laser will wont read. go to youtube.com type in fix my ps2 laser. you will watch a video on how to adjust your cd tray.
The reason for this issue is if the laser is to close or to far from the cd the laser cant read the cd.

Open your ps2 up remove the cover over the disc spinner and use compressed air to dust out the inner ps2 stuff and wipe the lens with soft cloth and then its fixed

Check your disk for scratches fingerprints ect,,
if thats all good step two
try useing a lens cleaner
****(( tip and trick for scratched disks ))****
a crayon rubbed on the disk then wiped off with a lint free cloth
no t-shirts dish towels that will just add more scratches
remember start at the center wipeing out to the edge.
if none of that works you may have a lens problem

There is no difference basically and your ps2 should read any ps2 or ps1 games regardless on how old or recent your console is. I believe you are still under a warranty try to have sony replace your ps2 because i am almost your its defective. the game works just fine its the console is probably defective.

Following could be the reasons for not spinning any PS2 disc:
No Spin At All If your spindle hub is NOT SPINNING AT ALL, NOT EVEN 1/2 OF A TURN, it may be bad or unplugged. A tell tale sign of it being unplugged is if you hit eject, the laser moves down the rail, and starts grinding because the PS2 keeps trying to move it down the rail even though it hit the end. There's a small switch on the spindle hub that tells the unit to stop pushing the laser because it's reached the end. Spindle hubs usually do not go bad by themselves, usually either the PS2 too a bad fall and it became bent [try spinning it by hand], or someone the cable out and put it in too many times [or incorrectly] and the silver contacts on the cable were detached.
