Question about Fuji FinePix S5000 Digital Camera

1 Answer

HELP..!! Please.. a few years ago i obtained the "perfect" camera s5000, and for the 1st time ever it has gone wrong. Everything seems to work fine, switches on, will play back images etc, BUT when you try to take a picture the screen and viewfinder will only show coloured distorted purple lines across the whole screen, if you take a picture like this then the playback view also showes the distorted coloured lines. The set up info, time date setting etc are still as crisp and clear as the day it was new. It also shows an exclaimation mark (!) and a hand with a couple of lines to the right of the hand so that it looks like it is waving, located on the right hand side of the screen

Your camera likely needs a new CCD imaging sensor. It is a cute little thing and is very expensive to replace. I've seen deals to repair any digital camera on eBay and I would check for a local repair person in your area. You can use the search on this site to see who might be close by. I have an A310 doing the same thing.

There's no way for you to fix this. You have the classic signs of a failed ccd unit. There's nothing you did to cause it and nothing you could have done to prevent it.

All you can do is to return the camera to Panasonic for repair. If the camera is out of warranty then demand a free repair on the basis that the sensor has clearly suffered a premature failure (it should have lasted a minimum of five years); the precedent for this kind of out of warranty repair was set a few years ago when Sony had a manufacturing defect on one of their sensors. It was used in many different makes and models and hundreds of thousands of free repairs were carried out.

I have a Cannon Powershot S500 and the screen is black with purple lines going thru it. This is the first time it happened. I tried turning it off and on, changed the battery but same problem appears.

You could be in luck here
Sony made the screen and this is a known prtoblem. i have included the details here for you to make your claim against Canon.

Several years ago, Sony turned out a bad batch of CCD sensors.
They were susceptible to moisture entering the CCD sensor over a long period of time.
This results in photos having drastic color changes that look like runny water colors,
In extreme cases, the images are totally black.

Sony put some of these sensors in Sony digital cameras and camcorders.
They also sold these defective CCD sensors to other camera manufacturers.

Most of these camera makers have announced that they will repair any such camera for free (regardless of the warranty situation).
They also have released a list of camera model numbers that may be affected.

This is not a recall.......they will only repair cameras that are showing the symptoms of failure.

Here is a link to a site that has tracked this problem from the start:

Go there for all the details.

and contact Canon repair centre to make youer claim

Canon Technical Support on their website. I have come across this before with this model a funamental fault perhaps. But at three years- time for a replacement I think Try Canon web site support first.
