Question about HP Compaq Presario R4000 Notebook

2 Answers

My compaq presario R4000 just stopped working and shut down - no warning - nothing!

I had the power cord attached and plugged in to the surge protector as usual. I was typing and all of a sudden there was a low 'beep' and the computer shut down - no messages, nothing. And now it will not power back up.

This later remined me that in the past if I take that laptop and use it in another room, even if I plug it in with the power cord to a wall outlet after a few hours at most I would get a message that the battery was low and to save all files now and then the computer would hybernate. That should not have been happening either but since I rarely used it in that mode I forgot about that until today's incident. Any ideas what might be wrong?

I tried all the combinations of taking the battery out, etc. The APC UPS is working fine for the other items I have plugged into it. As of last night the consensus was that I have a bad power supply and I have ordered a new one. Hope this does it. Thanks for responding!

Thank you for the suggestion on the connector on the laptop. I was lucky enough last night to find place to call that had a similar problem with laptops they manage for businesses. They suggested it sounded like a problem they had and it turned out to be exactly what you suggested. They also recomended a place to take the laptop to see if that was the problem. I was able to get to the recommended place before they closed last night and they did check for that and found the connector appears to be fine - and they diagnosed (and at no charge even!) the power supply as the most likely culprit. I hope that is what it was and that it solves the problem. With or without the battery in, and with the power supply plugged in one could get a 'flicker' of power but nothing to actually power up the laptop. I really appreciate the suggestions. If the new power supply works I will be back in touch to let everyone who has tried so quickly to provide allthe helpful suggestions know. I really appreciate the quick responses! Thank you.

Yeah i think you have your ac adapter burned or the surge protector blow up the protection fuse or there is some times like little botton that is a braker protection ,,,if you use extencion cord conect to a any kind of device you are overheating the device because the cord does not have the right wire that is required for the device and the device it will force it self to try to pull the power from the outlet

Bad battery. best way to kill a battery is to always have it charging and never using it or discharging it.

take the battery out and use it just with power cord, see if it shuts down again. or try to use it with JUST the battery if battery is bad the PC will not turn on or stay on

sometimes I have seen where the connector on the laptop where the power cord plugs in is broken or has a cold solder joint. if this is the case a new power supply will not help

but since you already ordered it let's hope it is the PSU

    Good luck!

Yes, go to Start>Control panel>Power Options. There also should be a screen brightness key on your key board, that looks like a sun shining, with arrows pointing up & down. To use that key, hit the FN key, right next to the Ctrl key. Push & hold the FN key, while pushing the up arrow. That should increase the brightness of your display. Good luck.

My compaq r4000 is powring on but nothing is coming up on the screen

Power drain would be a better solution in this case.
1.first shut down the comp
2.unplug the charger
3. remove the battery
and after press and hold the power button for 60 seconds without any charger and the battery. After the 60 seconds replug the battery and the charger and turn the computer .

I've had my Compaq Presario R4000 for quite a few years. It still runs great. I've only had one major problem, and it's quite annoying; it has gotten worse recently. First, my computer has the habit of...

Your power problem can be fixes. The fault is either the power connector on the laptop or the power plug which plugs into the laptop. If the power plug is faulty this can be fixed by replacing the plug and soldering it to the leads. (most likely there is a broken wire to the plug) You can check the power adapter plug with a multi-meter and observe the voltage reading as you wriggle the power plug, if the voltage fluctuates then the plug is faulty. If the power adapter is OK then the laptop connector is faulty, this can be repaired but requires the laptop to be dismantled to get at the laptop's power connector.
