Unfortunately a lot of us have the straight pipe for a drain that you describe. With no trap it is a source of entry for bugs from the sewer and vent pipe. I have the drain from my washer in the pipe with the rest of the opening covered over with duct tape, As long as you don't block or kink the drain pipe you should have no problem closing the area around the drain pipe. I've been running mine that way for over 20 years now! Thanks for using fixya!
