I previously had an HP printer that I coulsd just

I previously had an HP printer that I could just pop the memory card into the slot and transfer the images from my Canon Powershot S2 IS to my hard drive. That printer died, as well as the hard drive in my computer. I am now attempting to hard wire / download images from the camera into the new computer using a direct USB connection. I cannot get the images to transfer. What can I do?
