Re: bearings

Most bearings used on dryers are self lubricating, the metal used
in the bearing was impregnated with graphite for lubrication.

Start button on whirlpool dryer needs to br propped to continue cycle

The start button is used simply to get the motor up to speed to where the main windings take over when the centrifugal switch shifts outward at full motor speed. You need to examine the motor for excessive lint and manually move the cent switch to see if it is stuck. You can lube it after cleaning up the motor.themobilian_3051.jpg
Use this good stuff to safely lube your motor cent switch and cotton wells
Wiggle that switch when oiling so it will slide easy
See the hole I drilled? Lube that well up real good and work the motor by hand till it turns freely
These wells on each side feed the sleeve bearing with a layer of protection between the shaft and bearing. The oil drys out and makes the motor drag. It cannot get up to full speed and therefore you have to hold the start button down. themobilian_3055.jpg
Work the motor by hand till it turns freely, work the centrifucal switch till it slides easy.
OR just buy another motor and install it.

The problem is: On the tension arm/wheel for the

Did you try it with the belt off? Unplug the machine. You could try some Penetrating oil to loosen it, (hardware or auto parts store) but it sounds like it has jammed or the bearing has seized. WD 40 is not as good. If you are able to free it, I'd then lube it with a high temperature bearing grease. (Auto wheel bearing grease) Auto parts stores have little squeeze tubes sitting on their counters. $3. Call Maytag tech support and ask them if they have special grease and clear the use of bearing grease. It should all be the same. Don't over lube and make a mess.. If lubrication doesn't free it up, replace it.

good luck

That is caused by lack of lubrication of the REAR bearing for the drum. It will have to be removed and grease will need to be added. If the machine is run without this, a new bearing will have to be purchased. If the squeeling just started, the bearing is ok - you just have to get the job done very soon. While in there, they should clean the lint out. They should also lube the idler pulley for the belt. The idler pulley is often forgotten, and this item should be lubed every time the machine is serviced. Good luck.

I have an old GE dryer model DDG5380valwh. When try to start it it just hums. What should I do?

** ALLWAYS unplug a dryer before working on it.
Humming means the motor may not be turning.
The motor could be 'capacitor start'. Replace the capacitor.
The motor could be centrifugal start. Remove the belt. Still won't start? Replace the motor.
The motor bearings could be seized. Rebuild the motor or replace it.
The belt may be broken if the humming is a higher pitch. Replace the belt.
The drum may be jammed. Clean and lube the main bearing (Use Maytag Turbine oil or the recommended lube), the support wheels or the guides. Replace felt seals at the same time for best results.

The drum when turning is wobbling. There are no support rollers on this dryer.

I just looked at there are two possibilites for this dryer the cheaper one is bearing support part Number 131825900 that could be worn.  They also offer what looks to be a complete kit that replaces the previous part and also the part on the center of the rear drum.

This is called Bearking 5303281153 it appears to be a whole kit to include the lube for the ball portion of the plate that goes into the socket.  Quite possibly the bearing support has just worn out over time from the lubrication drying out.  The easiest way to work on it only once is to buy the bearing kit and replace it the lube keeps the plastic (well fancy nylon impregnated plastic) from wearing out prematurely.
Hope this helps

My GE Profile Dryer is still operating but produces loud intermitent noise as the drum rotates. What can I do to eliminate the noise?

It sounds like you may have a bad bearing in the back of the drum. That model rotates on a sort of ball and socket type mechanism. You may be able to lubricate it if the noise is just squealing/squeaking. If it is more than that, you'll probably need to replace the bearing mechanism. If you lube it, use a heavy weight lube that is rated for high heat (I've used brake caliper grease.)

My dryer works right it's just when it's running

Usually lound screeching and squeaking noises are caused by dry drum rollers. You need to lube the rollers or replace them. When I say lube the roller I mean the shaft and bearing part of the roller.

Lubing the bearings

Bearings of the type used in appliances like this require no lubrication. If they ask anything it's to remain clean and free of lint. Oiling this type of bearing actually ATTRACTS lint and hair.
