Initially, postback with the brand and model number of the camera.
Offhand, in some models there are setting for such modes. Have you tried checking the available selections?

- The "...gray even when I point the camera directly at a light source..." indicative that the CCD (charge-couple device) and/or its related electronic circuitry has failed. The CCD is the eye of the camcorder (Optical Sensor).
Have you tried playing back a tape that was taken 6 years ago. You may need to fast forward and rewind it a bit to exercise the spools / tape.
If the previously taken movies could be viewed in the LCD display clearly then the faulty CCD has been confirmed.
