How to replace agitator dogs

I have taken the top off the agitator and removed the plastic piece. I see a bolt or screw in the middle of the inside plastic agitator, and I see 4 plastic pieces. How do I change the agitator dogs?

Re: How to replace agitator dogs

Remove the bolt and pull the entire agitator off. Turn upside down and separate the two pieces. You'll see the part that holds the dogs in place

To replace the dog kit in the agitator, remove the top cap/rinse dispenser and the inner bolt cover. Remove the 7/16" bolt and lift the agitator out of the washer. Separate the upper and lower pieces of the agitator and replace the dog kit inside the upper part of the agitator. Make sure the 4 pieces remain in place while putting the agitator back together.

The bottom part of the agitator will turn, but not the top part

The agitator has two parts. One is the bottom agitator and then you have the top agitator that moves the clothes around. If the top part of the agitator is not moving. You probably need to replace the dog ears. Check the agitator dogs inside the top of the agitator, they are bad for wearing out, sometimes the agitator may only agitate one way when the dogs are worn out. This is an instruction sheet that came with the last parts I ordered for a Whirlpool/Inglis style direct drive washer agitator. If you need to replace your agitator dogs, please see this link for some repair aid. -- click on this link directly to get the detailed instruction for replacing dog ear
to remove the whole agitator check out the instructions as follows:
(1) Kenmore washer..... Remove the agitator cap, some caps unscrew and some will just pull off. Look for a bolt and remove the bolt, lift up on the agitator...picture1, picture2.
(2) Kenmore washer.....Remove the agitator cap, some caps unscrew and some will just pull off. Look for a plastic bolt and remove the bolt, the plastic bold will have a square in the middle that the square end of the shaft of an socket extension ( or a very large flat screw driver ) will fit into the square hole to unscrew the plastic nut off...remove the upper 1/2 of the agitator....remove thebolt holding down the bottom 1/2 of the agitator, lift up on the agitator. also you can get the exact required parts from
This will help. Thanks please keep updated. please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya.

Should you be able to turn tke adgatator by hand with ease? it sound the washer makes when adgatating is not the same it made in the past and it seems to be slipping. The washer was new in 2005 or 2006.

Your agitator dogs are stripped out. Pry off the top lid of the agitator. Reach inside with a pair of pliers and pull the plastic tab loose. Take a 7/16 socket wrench and a extension to remove the bolt inside. Pull up sharply on the agitator to remove it.
Take the center piece holding the rubber dogs out of the agitator. Replace the 4 tear shaped dogs and re-install the agitator.

Replacing the agitator dogs in a Kenmore 80 series washer

Hi, Remove the cap on the agitator and then remove the inside cover. There is a 7/16" bolt under the inside cover. Remove the bolt and the agitator will lift out. Seperate the 2 pieces of the agitator and replace the dogs. You might have to use a flat blade screw drive and punch out the 4 tabs around the bolt hole in the agitator if this applies.
I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Top agitator not working properly

Check the agitator by turning it back and forth. It should work like a ratchet (turns one way, locks the other way).If you're able to turn it in both directions, the agitator dogs are worn and need to be replaced. To do this remove the agitator cap and the bolt that holds down the agitator. With the bolt out you can remove the top section of the agitator (auger) where you should see 4 small white or beige plastic gears (dogs). Replace those and it should be ok.

Agitator dogs part number is 80040

Need to get the agitator off

that's funny [feed dogs]they are called, dog ears but you do now have to feed the dogs because their not you will have to get those parts on-line or at an appliance store.lowes wont carry those that i know.anyway if you pop the cap of the agitator you will see a piece that has a small handle.pull up and remove that piece.then you will see the bolt to remove to pull the agaitator[its a 7/16]take a good look at how its together before you take apart.......ok now that the agitator is out place on floor, put feet on the bottom piece and pull up on the top piece til comes off.then dump out the piece in the top w/dog ears in it........install new ears in that piece and reinstall upside down, inthe top piece of the agitator.then apply pressure on the dog ear retainer and place over the bottom piece of the agitate aligning the two little tabs sticking up on the bottom piece of the agitator with the little cut outs in the dog ear take your socket to place bolt back on,put some plastic wrapper or package from dogs in the socket and push the bolt into it.then place the bolt in the hole of the dog ear retainer .now lift agitator up and place onto transmission shaft and tighten bolt and place cover back on................boy that was a lot of words.that should do it for you God bless you Tiffany ,from tom
