You iPhone simcard may just have been jostled loose. The sim card sits in a tray, accessible using a paper clip. Try removing it and replacing it, that may help.
Have you tried putting your old sim into another phone then transferring the contacts to the old phone, then putting your new sim in the old phone and copying the contacts onto the sim, then put your new sim (with copied contacts on) into your iphone and import contacts.
Hi. If you have 250 contacts or less, you may use a SIM card to transfer contacts. If you have 251 contacts or more, you may "mark all" contacts and copy to your memory card then use a converter. You can search google for free vcard converter. Good luck.

open "address book", then press "option"scroll down to "SIM contacts" and press the right-navigation key and select "SIM Directory"
It will display contacts on your SIM card. To copy contacts from SIM to phone memory. Select "Options" then scroll down to "Mark/Unmark" press right-navigation key and select "Mark All" then select "Options" again and then select "Copy to Contacts"
That will copy your contacts from SIM to Phone directory.
