You will either need to re-install windows, or search the internet for a password cracking utility. Since I don't feel comfortable giving explicit instructions to the whole internet, I am sorry to say you must google more than that.

I'm locked out forgot password

If you can tell me what the Os do you use, it could be must better.

On XP you can try this:
Boot computer and press Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice when you See Windows welcome screen / login screen. It'll show classic login box. Now type "Administrator" (without quotes) in username field and leave password field blank, press Enter and you should be able to login Windows.
Now you can reset your account password from "Control Panel -> User Accounts".

On Win 7 or Vista:
Ctrl+Alt+Delete won't work, you have to use some windows password reset tool. I recommend Windows Password Reset.

Forgot user name n password for Windows 2000 Professional

You will need the Windows 2k disc. However you won't be able to find one unless you check out like ebay. Win 2k has been EOL for years now. I would suggest even buying the lowest end computer for around $250-300 and it would be tremendously faster than what you have currently. You could also check around at pawn shops, mom and pop computer stores for cheaper ~$50-100 dollar comptuters that would be better than this. I wouldn't waste your time trying to fix such an old computer.

I bought a used gateway laptop at a thrift store. I cannot get past the password portion of the os. I says make sure the username is correct. There is a user name on the comp in that area. It is win 2000...

Simplest option would be to use a "recovery disk" if such a thing was supplied, otherwise it may mean reinstalling/repairing Windows.
Only other option is to try and "Crack" the password using some of the utilities available on the internet.

Password is not accepted

Is it the windows password. Simply crate another user & password and enter user accounts in the control panel and delete the earlier username & account. Now you can put the same name for user and enter a password you can remember....sodeep
