Restoring Your ComputerĀ“s Software to the Factory Settings for Windows Vista

Table of Contents:

  1. Backup important files & data.
  2. Remove non-essential peripherals.
  3. Restore the computer's software to original condition.
  4. Restore your personal files and data from backups.
  5. Download and install driver updates
This article provides information on restoring your computerĀ“s software to the factory settings.
Dell has designed two new backup and restore programs.
Dell Inspiron, Studio, and XPS computers use DataSafe Local Backup 2.0 as the PC Restore/Factory Image Restore option as of April 22, 2009.
Dell OptiPlex, Latitude, Vostro, and Precision computers use Dell Backup and Recovery Manager as the PC Restore/Factory Image Restore option as of May 26, 2009.

Backup important files and data

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel window, click System and Maintenance, and then click Back Up and Restore Center.
  3. Under Back up files or your entire computer, click Back up files.
If the User Account Control window appears, and you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
  4. On the Where do you want to save your backup? page, choose the location in which to save the backup. To do this, click either On a hard disk, CD, or DVD or On a network, and then specify the location. If you select a hard disk, be sure to save the backup to an external drive such as a USB key or USB hard drive.
  5. Click Next.
  6. On the Which file types do you want to backup? page, click to select the check boxes next to the types of files that you want to back up, and then click Next.

Backup will save the files in the background and may take several minutes to complete. If you specified a removable drive, Backup may prompt you to enter an additional blank disc if more than one is necessary to hold all your files. Be sure to label your discs thoroughly (such as "My Files Disc 1" etc.) so you can quickly restore them later.
Once the Backup Complete message appears, you are ready to proceed with the next step.

Trying to backup my 2415 iPaq. It used to save .exe files. Now, it only saves .pbf files. What's the difference - or does it make any difference at all? Also, I have a second iPaq that does NOT...

an .exe file is an EXEcutable file, it is the file that starts a program. It is not the backup data, but it may be the program that captures it.

Your .pbf files are indeed backup data files by Paragon backup and recovery program.

So, you would open Paragon using its .exe file and it backs up the data to .pbf files. To restore the files, you would open Paragon, and point to the last .pbf file or files to restore.

And yes, you could have Paragon Backup and Recovery on both machines and save the backups to a USB memory stick. What is on the memory stick can be accessed by Paragon on both machines. Make sure it is data only, rather than system files unless each computer is absolutely identical in model and spec.

Wish to reset to factory spects. Echo uncontroled Feedback, Volume keys not working.

There are 2 ways to bring up the Restore function. The first is to turn on your laptop and as soon as you see the Dell logo press the Right Hand CTRL key and the F11 key at the same time. If your laptop was setup this way then you should see the Restore program run from the hidden restore partition of your hard drive.

If the above does not start the Restore process they your laptop was setup with the Dell DataSafe Restore system then follow these steps:

1) Shut down the Computer.

2) Turn on the Computer and start pressing the "F8" Key on the first Dell logo. Keep on pressing the "F8" key on first Dell screen until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears on the screen.

3) Highlight "Repair Your Computer" and hit ENTER.

4) Specify the language settings that you want, and then click Next.

5) Enter your Password and click OK.

6) On Choose a Recover Tool Window
Select: Dell DataSafe Restore and Emergency Backup.

7) You should see the following menu:
a. Restore computer and preserve my new or changed files
b Select other System Backup and more options
8. Select: Select other System Backup and more options
You get:
a. Restore my computer
b. Backup Files and folders

Select: Restore my computer..
Confirm the restore and continue..
Select: Factory Image restore

9) Choose Restore without preserving new or changed files and click on Next.

10) Click on Continue.

Your system should then run the DataSafe Restore and your laptop will be brought back to the same setup it had when you first turned it on. This will of course wipe out any data you have saved to the laptop as well as any extra programs you have installed. If you updated any of your drivers you will have to back to the Dell Support site and download and re-install the drivers.

Everytime i try to open an application or anything, it says the file "rundll32.exe" is not a win32 file, how do i change

Hi hansomeone45

Maybe you have virus on your computer, and it has infected the file rundll32.exe and therefore you cannot use it.

You can try several things I explain here :

IF you have a backup copy of your hard disc´s you can restore from the backup copy.

You can try to system restore in at the : start- all programs- accessories- system accessories- system restore
or in : start- help and support- and there find "system restore"

System restore will roll back the computer as it was before (day, week, month ago).

You can reinstall the computer for the procedure please look here :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

You can read about the file here :
http://en.kioskea.net/contents/processus/rundll32-exe.php3

Or you can try to run this app :
http://www.rundll-exe.com/

OR
http://www.goarticles.com/cgi-bin/showa.cgi?C=1945037

Remember you can try to copy the file from another computer to your computer !

Hope that helps
Have a nice weekend

Restore backup files

You should have everything saved ("backed up") on dvds now. Your next step is to pop in the restore discs that came with the computer unless you have a vista machine that isn't a toshiba or dell because vista machines (like HP) makes you create your own.

pop in your disc, boot to cd, and press next a few times... it will delete everything and get the pc back to the first day you bought it.
