Zoom not working

My camera has worked prefectly for the past three years (I use it for photographing corrosion problems on bridges etc) and the camera has always been kept in a padded carrying case.
Now all of a sudden the lens will not zoom out when the camera is turned on and the screen has a message stating 'zoom error'.
How can this be rectified?
