Half empty black cart stopped printing, error

Half empty black cart stopped printing, error message to replace. New cart also didn't print. Repeated cycles of clean and prime did nothing -- nothing but fill the bottom of the printer with a puddle of ink. Troubleshooting page suggests cleaning or replacing the cartridge service module. Is this possible on this machine. Is it a dead puppy or worth fixing?
