Here's my shortcut:
Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard
Here is a suggestion from the iRiver website - you may want to visit that website, b/c their "Ask Alice" tech support feature is actually quite good:
The players come with a CD that contains drivers and software that
enable the player to download data from a PC. Insert the CD in the
computer's CD drive, and connect the player to the PC with the USB
cable. (
Help with USB cable connections) The
PC should automatically detect the device. The New Hardware
Installation Wizard will automatically launch and the installation
process will start.

you still have trouble, the issue may be with the computer chipset.
