Low Bitrate- the higher the bitrate the better quality sound. If ripping mp3's I prefer 320kbps
Burn speed too high- for good quality it's best not to burn at maximum speed. Although most CD burners will burn at 48X - 54X speed, select a slower speed (24X works well).
Scratchy or poor media- it's possible that there's was a scratch on your CD or that you got a bad CD. Bargain CD's usually work pretty well but you will always get a few bad 1's in a spindle that end up being coasters.
CD burner not properly grounded or plugs not secure. This is less likely unless it's an aftermarket device but still a possibility if you've done maintenance on your machine and pulled on a ribbon cable or power supply.
