Question about Logitech Harmony 880 LCD Remote Control

1 Answer

880 won't work unless I hold it within two inches of tv

I have already replaced and fully charged the battery. Any thoughts? Replace IR LEDs? (Where might I purchase those?)

It sounds like it may be an interference issue with the IR. Some LCD TV's can cause interference with an IR signal which will cause problems with the remote. Something you can try to fix is disabling the Auto Back-Lighting feature on the TV itself and see if that helps. If not, the easiest way to fix would be to make the TV1 remote UHF.

This would require a 21.0 remote as a 20.0 is IR only. Look on the back of the remote at the top to see what model you have.

With a 21.0 go to System Information. On the back of the remote inside the battery cover is a switch that says IR And UHF and make sure the green 1 is showing. Flip it to UHF and press Record 3 times. The Primary Address should now have UHF in it. Try the remote and see if it works.

If it doesn't or you continue to have problems you can post here or email me at

Does not turn any equipment on or off. has power but does not communicate at all. I have rebooted, etc. but no luck. Old remotes still work. It appears that IR is dead.

If you have confirmed that the remote's IR emitters have failed and you are out of the warranty period (1 yr), you have a few choices. You can contact Logitech. They will usually issue a 50% discount on a new remote. Or, you can try to repair the remote yourself using the guidance in this article:

Or, you can have it repaired for $14 (or less if you haggle) from this Ebay seller:

Good luck!

My 880 will not charge I used this 2 years ago and it worked The remote still holds the old settings I now want yo use it but the unit said battery low recharge. I tried to charge it but it would not...

There is a trick with these remotes. Take a tiny piece of paper and
wedge it in between the battery and the side of the battery compartment
opposite the battery contacts when you insert battery.
This will apply more pressure between battery contacts and remote.
Now your harmony should properly charge up overnight.
Had the same problem with mine and the paper trick fixed it.
Was even able to use the old battery again.
Has something to do with the three contacts on the battery.
All 3 need to make good contact.

Harmony 880 will not turn any components on

First, check your battery indicator (make sure it's fully charged).  Second, dock your remote with the USB cable and reprogram the remote.  It's possible you disconnected before the programming was properly transmitted to your remote.  Finally, if things don't work, use the HELP button on the remote.  It should talk you through a procedure to fix your problem.

you need to return it. one of the IR led only works. I had that, had to return (RMA) the unit. you can check with some camcorders to see how bright the LED is (the camcorders often can 'see' the IR led like a white light).
i.e. either the power circuit for the IR LEDs is failing or the IR LED themselves are dead.
there is nothign you can fix on your own. CAll the support and get a replacement unit. or return the remote to a store if you just bought it.

Remote needs ABSOLUTE DIRECT Line of sight

If the battery was out for that long, it's likely that the remote lost its programming.  Did you try reattaching it to the website after the battery had recharged, so that the programming could be restored?

We have a logitech 880 Harmony TV remote. It will not hold a charge. We bought a new battery and that did not help. It will not do anything Now it says "safe mode requested" AA681, B2390.

Assumption: the remote did not in any way receive physical damage including any sort of moisture or liquid inside.

Aside from you replacing the battery which you already indicated, I would recommend you contact Logictech technical support.

One more thing you may want to try is to take a soft pencil eraser and make sure the three gold contacts are clean by rubbing each with the eraser to insure good contact when sitting in the charge cradle.
