Terrible smell coming from our washing machine

with m/c off and no water in ,check strainer located behind lower panel at bottom.dirt collects there. some water will drain out,so have old towels on floor.it has a hand screw-off cover

remove bottom cover at back of machine, loosen large jubilee clip on hose between drum and pump. pull hose down and off, take out strainer basket and pull top off, clean top, ball and basket by running under tap. clean out hose with an old rag. reassemble strainer and put back into hose, in the correct position. fix hose back on to drum and tighten clip. run machine on a hot wash and all should be fine.
