When I copy a DVD onto my hard drive, I'm able to put that data onto a new DVD immediately, but I can't play the media files back from my hard drive. How do I convert the files to media/video files so I can play back from my hard drive, instead of creating several DVDs?

itz unclear to me as what type of data u r coping..
howevr, try downloading n install 'k-lite mega codec pack'..
http://www.codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_mega.htm
it may solve ur problem..!!

there r several tools to join video/media files..u may try with H J Split/River past Video Cleaner Pro/DVD Fab/No1VideoConverter..so on
