Problem for Canon PowerShot A640 Digital Camera

Camera switches off when i click one of the buttons

When I press the left button (on the 4 way directional dial on the right) in shooting mode, my camera switches off, and the lens doesn't even retract back. The same thing happens when I'm reviewing my pictures.
