My camera has the same problem. The screen is black when I turn the camera on. When I take a picture and put the memory card into a reader, it shows a black photo. I've tried it in all modes. What does this mean? and can it be fixed?

Same exact problem. Today I went to use the camera and the monitor was black, except for all the normal menus and function displays which still show up and all work just fine. Basically, there's no lens image in the viewfinder. I tried taking a few shots to see if maybe that worked and the pictures all came out pitch black.

This camera has not been heavily used and is stored in a safe place, so something literally went bad while it was sitting on the shelf. Up until now this has been a fantastic camera and I am pretty sad that it seems to have suddenly died. Any other suggestions for troubleshooting the problem would be appreciated, because it seems to be quite serious.

Two things to try...
A) If you have a card with some photo's on it then put it in the camera... Will the camera display the photos from the card in view/play mode? If so then the screen is working but the sensor in the camera may have died (the but that captures the image).
B) Try taking a picture with the camera (go through the steps to take one even though you can't see anything on the screen). Then put the memory card in a reader or a friends camera and see if the picture did get taken. If so then the sensor is still okay and the fault may be with the display.

If the display will show images from the memory card but doesn't show anything when in picture-taking mode but the camera does take pictures then the camera has a fault that isn't either the sensor or the LCD. It could then be an electronic failure or a problem with the mode selection switch.

Hope this helps to figure it out.

Black screen while shooting, but still taking pictures not black

Nonononooooo fotomohamed, he can review just taken pictures on the LCD. The screen is working.

Actually, it sounds like you just accidentally pressed the DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the screen on and off in picture taking mode to save batteries (you would then use optical viewfinder). Just press it once and it should turn back on.

The Digital Rebel XTi doesn't have 'live view' mode, you can't see what you're taking a picture of before you take the picture.

Then it sounds like there may be an error with your CCD (what comverts the light going into your camera into a digital picture, like digital film). even if your warranty is expired canon may still repair this for free. Contact canon at 1-800-OK-CANON and explain to them the problem and that you think the CCD may be defective.

CCD sensor faulty ( sits behind the lens inside and this device converts light into image ) . If the camera has not been abused the repair ought to be done free of charge because properly manufactured CCD or CMOS unit should last 15 years !

My camera wont take the picture and screen is black

Be sure to fully charge your batteries if rechargeable - at least 14 hours. Check that your card door is closed good - it's common for the latch to break. There's a switch at the top of the door that has to close before it'll turn on.
