Re: MYBook 500 GB Mac Edition external

I've got the same problem, but what i am going to try is to get another sata enclosure, put it and see if it works....
some other posts online said that Western Digitals components suck and therefore the mechanism for powering up the drive easily gives up......
firstly try removing the drive from the enclosure and go get a $30 enclosure with a SATA connection....this should do the trick, if not than save up some serious cash for Professional Data Recovery guy' ain't cheappp !
i'll keep you posted on if it works out for me !

How do i use a wd external drive 500 gb on a mac & pc

The MAC can read and write PC files but not the other way around.
To do this the USB external hard drive needs to be formatted using the PC and formatted in FAT32.
Once this is done then you can exchange data between the MAC and PC.

MyBook 2TB used as backup drive and connected via FW to other external HD. Had been powered off for a couple of months When powered up again, it does not show as a device (Mac OSX 10.6.4). Front light...

I would listen to the enclosure near your ear to see if you hear any "spinning up noises." Or if you hear "clicking" or "buzzing or beeping." Just to verify the drive is okay. It could have gone bad; being it is so new, it would be under warranty replacement. Also, connect the drive up to another computer in an effort to see if the interface is okay. There could be a problem with the usb controller inside the Mybook. HOwever, once you open it - the warranty is void. Lastly, you could send it to a data recovery company and see if they will diagnose it. Western Digital has a list of approved recovery companies on their website.

1 TB WD Mybook

The essential edition is a single drive unit. if you have another computer you could pull the drive out of the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer to retrieve your data. I use an external usb 2.0 to IDE/Sata adapter that connects to the drive and the PC. These can be found online for $10.00-$15.00. This adapter has saved me many times in the past. The other option is to connect the MyBook to another computer (Mac or PC) and see if that computer will read the drive correctly or not.

Post back with your findings,

Mac won't acknowledge Mybook!

try restarting your computer with the mybook plugged into it. also, leave it plugged in for a while and check back to see if it shows up on the desktop. I had a similar problem with my hard drive too, and this seemed to work.

Same problem. Had to ditch the HD swaping and just use a network share. I lost 2 500 Western Digitals the same way and they can only say ," so sorry for you".

My Book, Need upgrade to make it compatible with Mac Leopard OS X. Article #1716.

1) Go to 2) Click Downloads 3) Select MyBook, then your MyBook model (I selected MyBook Home, as it was appropriate to my hardware) 4) Download and install the WD Drive Manager (Mac)
Note that this software only updates the utilities that control the power button, drive lights, and capacity gauge. If the drive is otherwise not functioning properly, you'll probably need to seek alternate support: the hardware itself functions just fine for me as an external drive without installing any additional software or drivers.
