Question about Tomtom GO 700 GPS Receiver

Tom tom go 720

When switched on i get red flashing circle with white cross and nothing else,i have tried tom tom home and and get a message that my device needs to download a file, but when i attempt to download i am told the file is not avaliable at the moment.
The device is about 3 months old and was working fine up until now,it was switched off for about a week during xmas and the problem has started since then.

    Updated to the lastest v7.221 and now the Tom Tom starts up and then stops at a red flashing cross.

    my tom tom go 720 worked fine until i upgraded it now all i get is the red dot with a white cross on it.

    I have the same problem with a GO 720. Everything was fine until I did a software upgrade. I have tried the reset suggestion but it makes no difference. I have been told that a possible solution is to reinstall the original OS (i.e. the one that was there before the upgrade) but I cannot find this anywhere

    same exact thing after the update download, do not dowload the updates at all cost, unless you wanna render your gps useless

    Got new TT Go 720 for Father's Day Sunday worked fine out of the box, connected to computer for updates, got red x, shut off tried reset, no luck, talked with customer support, no help, made it worse. 2nd Cust Supp person gave me a website, confusing to navigate and not all of the options mentioned were there, next person helped more but unit needed to be returned to store. less than 48 hrs later, same problems with 2nd unit, had computer wxpert check my system for problems nothing found, only suggestion - the bus terminal is a powered port, try plugging directly into front/back of computer, helped alittle, also tried plugging into car port, when unit couldn't be turned back on and this worked, unfortunately the program they recommended that I remove kept me from doing anything furthur, just as well because it wouldn't turn on without outside power any way, I contacted cust service again, 1st person suggested that I had charged it for too long...not possible with Li ion batteries, Also suggested that I not update it until I used it for a month or so, ridiculous how else do I charge it without buying a seperate charger, or leaving it in my hot vehicle which is clearly marked not to do on the box.Next person at cust service on with me for 2 hrs very nice but nothing worked, sent me "upstairs" to another department, same thing all over again, no help. I sent them a very long e-mail about their quality control issues.... against my better judgement I just got a 3rd unit today, I have no intention of updating anything until I know its going to work this time. If I have another problem I am going to change to a
    garmin, I chose this one due to the features that I wanted and ease of use, I have a Garmin hand held that I've had for 6 yrs, and had no problems right out of the box or since, however it is not practical when driving, it is meant more for trekking/hunting etc...I'll keep youall informed......

I have exactly the same problem. Everything worked fine until I did a software upgrade. I have tried the reset suggestion but it has not fixed the problem. I have been told that a possible solution is to install the version of the OS that was there prior to the upgrade but I cannot find this anywhere

    This worked for me



    • The device hangs in the start screen (splash screen)
    • An SD-card with a red cross is displayed on the screen
    • A picture with a red dot and white cross is displayed
    • The device can’t be turned off

    If you haven't already done so, please download and Install TomTom Home from http://www.tomtom.com/7602

    If you don’t have a full backup of your TomTom yet we advise you to make one before continuing with the steps in this email. You can make a backup by following the steps below:

    1. Reset your TomTom device: http://www.tomtom.com/6965 and connect it to your computer.
    2. Click on 'Backup and Restore -> Backup' in TomTom Home 2.0
    3. Enter a name for the backup and click [OK]
    • IMPORTANT: When the software is asking to delete parts from the backup click [NO]

    After the backup is made you delete the files from the root directory of the TomTom. Follow the steps below to do this:

    1. Reset your TomTom device: http://www.tomtom.com/6965 and connect it to your computer.
    2. Open My Computer in Windows, or Finder in Macintosh from your desktop and turn on your TomTom device.
    3. On your screen a new removable disk appears, this is your TomTom device, click on the disk to open it.
    4. You will see a list of folders and a list of loose files
    5. Delete all of the loose files. IMPORTANT: The folders with their content must NOT be deleted.
    5. Close the window when all files are deleted by clicking on the [x].

    Next we will reinstall the application via TomTom HOME.

    1. Start TomTom HOME on your computer
    • TomTom Home should automatically check for updates and prompt you to install them, if not:-
    2. Click on 'Update my device'. If you get the message 'No Items Available', or there is not an application to download, click on 'Add Maps, Traffic, Voices etc -> Items on my computer', select the application and click on 'Add'.
    3. Select the Application update.
    4. Click on 'Device -> Disconnect Device', then turn off your device when it is done installing and disconnect it from your computer.
    5. On a PC, in the System Tray by the computer clock, click on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon and disconnect the TomTom also in this way.

    When switching on the device it should boot as normal again.

Solution #5 worked for me in terms of getting rid of the X... but now I am stuck in Guam. I think this is progress.

Ah! I have to switch maps! Stupid! (Why did it think I was in Guam?)

Main Menu > Change Preferences > Manage maps and then Switch map

I have a Tom Tom XL IQ Route/XL Classic which is 1 month old. When I switched it on it came up with a blue screen , picture of Tom Tom in left top corner and on the right a white cross flashing on a red...


the problem it has is the software seems to either have a problem or the mapping itself is the problem, if you bought the device brand new from a shop like halfords, then you will have the TomTom 1 year warranty, but you need your reciept for it to be authorised.
if you have done a back up of the device previously on tom tom home then you can format it and it may back up ok.

alternatively go into any Halfords or other store and speak to the specialists and they'll give you any info they can give.

Large white X in red circle flashing



This works for most tomtoms so there is nothing to loose and everything to gain

Remove the SD card

The card needs to be formatted properly first that's all,

formatting is better done in a card reader.(opionions vary)

Right click on it and select format select FAT32 as the files system

Now connect the tomtom but don't let tomtom home run. exit TTH if need be.

You now ned to select your tom tom which will also show as a drive.

In windows explorer select tools then folder options. Click view and tick the box for "show hidden files and folders"
It may warn you but you can ignore it.

then just copy ALL the files from the tom tom to your sd card

DO NOT USE CUT AND PASTE !

Once all the files are on switch off the tom tom and insert the sd card

It should now work

Ah, another case of the Red X. No worries, it can be fixed. Most likely your connection was interrupted during an installation or removal of software features. Follow this guide to get your TomTom back up and running.

Tom Tom 720 won't back up and falters during operations


You have to make a manual back up of the device. Make a new folder on your desk top. Connect your device to your PC and turn it on. Go to my computer and look for tom tom storage device and open it. You will see all the folders that is in your tom tom. Copy and paste just the yellow ones into the new folder. When you have done this you can know reformat your device. Do this by right clicking on the tom tom logo (in my computer). Click fat 32 (full format). This will wipe everything off. Disconnect your device, you will see a red cross on the screen. reset the device with a paper clip (hold in for 30 sec) You will still see the red cross. connect back up to PC and install the latest application of to tom home on to the device. From here you can go to add maps ect, and put your maps back on the device. Tom tom home will give you all the updates your device will be missing. You will only need the maps so don't worry if you can not copy all folders (for whatever reason) you can get everything you need as well as free updates for free via tom tom home. Its only the maps you have to pay for.

TomTom GO 720 - flashing red circle with white cross on screen


Hi, I am back, just got the problem solved, I called their tech support at no charge (866-486-6866, Glen) , really good service.
First turn your firewall off (if you have one). You need to go into your 720 with the TomTom Home software and erase the downloaded software (with the remove items from my device) and reset the device (little reset button under the unit keep it pressed for 5 seconds), place it back in the cradle and restart your computer and than restart the 720 , bring the TomTom Home program up, and when the TomTom Home software in your computer restarts and detects the 720 it will tell you that you need to update the application, if it doesn't than you force the update by going to the add maps option, select items on my computer, select applications and press the add button, when done, go back and to device (option in top of your screen) and select disconnect device, restart your 720 and it should be back to life with the upgraded software.
