Question about HP Xb3000 Notebook Expansion Base And 400gb Kit 400 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

XB3000 Intermittent power

My expansion base power is intermittent, once power is lost so is access to the optional internal hard drive and USB connections to the ports attached to the base except the RJ45 port (internet connection). I can remove the power connection from the back of the expansion base and connect direct it directly to the HP Pavilion dv9000 Notebook PC to continue PC charge put I still lose access to the base connections.

xb3000 Expansion Base just cuts off after I have been on it about thirty minutes. This is the second one with the same problem. Called HP was not familiar with the problem. Wanted me to take in to Best Buy (authorized dealer for HP) and let them run another laptop on the expansion base.

  • lilolehs Feb 21, 2008

Yes, I'm having the same problem. HP has bounced me around through 8 different technicians who were incredibly... well... er... had NO IDEA what to do so the kept advising me it was the expansion base. I already replaced the base and am still having the issue -- no power through the base, even though it worked when I first got it! This is incredibly frustrating!

The same thing happened to me, my HP xb3000 notebook expansion base works completely, except recently (don't know when it started) the base wont' charge my computer anymore. It does everything it's suppose to. the ac power adapter still has to be connected through the base for it's features to work, but it won't send the power from the adapter to the computer. PLEASE HELP!!!

Same problem with HP xb 3000 expansion base. I have two one for office and one for home. Both quit working on the same day. Repair center said trouble not with HP dv9005us but with bases! What? Just because computer is under extended warrenty and bases are not. Can't even find parts to replace connection cable IF that is where the problem is. HELP!!

  • ryanmjt Aug 10, 2008

Ditto. The base works fine, except it won't charge the battery.

  • Grishenko Oct 31, 2008

This is ridiclous, my docking station has been working fine for about a year now, and all of the sudden it staretd saying "plugged in, not charging" and then eventually it didnt even recognize the power intake. Like the other, I now have to plug it directly into my laptop which is incredibly annoying for when I want louder speakers or my printer to work.

Sudden loss of power recognition, drained all the energy out of the pavillion battery and the system has to go on a sudden shut down , when re plugged directly to AC the indicator showed only 4% left on the battery unit clearly the base is to blame, I did not come across any solutiuon yet!

Yes, the same thing happened to me.  I bought a new AC Adapter.  No luck.  I bought a new battery.  No luck.  I've tried updating drivers.  No luck.

    Very irritating.

DV9000 stops working after being connected to the xb3000 for about 30 minutes. HP says that they are unfamiliar with the problem and that it was out of warranty. They have no "fix" just a defective product. Anyone hear "Class Action". I have advanced computer skills and this may be a small item on the radar screen, but HP used to be a top notch company....not so as much now as they DO NOT stand by their products. I have personally purchased no less that five either pcs or laptops from them and also have several printers/all - in- ones. I alos buy them for my clients. HPs used to come with a five year standard warranty. Now it is one year. I purchase the additional warranty for my computers but did not think it would be need for what is basically a glorified extension cord. I am disappointed in HP and will no longer recommend them to my clients.

This is a known problem with older Pavilion notebooks and xb3000 - the miniute the battery level drops below 100% because of some high drain activity the notebook can't detect the expansion base. The workaround is to get another charger and plug it in to the notebook as if it were standing alone, then cycle the power on the charger attached to the expansion base, and the notebook will re-connect to the expansion base. Once the notebook battery is back to 100% you can disconnect the spare charger. The frequency of the problem increases with battery age.

Wow like XB3000 day, find it in garage sale for $3?
DV9000 is a match !
This is dead product, now in the LEGACY status....(means dead)
NO OS stated, XP??? why post leaving out the most key part.?
this device has zero support at HP now. zip
and is a 2005 produced (first one) and is XP only, (will 2005 is that)
the drivers are not available now. anywhere,
so... only google might find them, I see zero

HP does not support old legacy devices, who does?
no law requires over 10 year support.
so if all XP drivers for the XB3000 are present
and all batteries are good.
power packs all good.
and no XP viruses present (never seen 1 XP clean in my life)
then it can work
did you read the manual first

try to know that parts this old can not even be sourced now.
did youo ever work in production factory like me.?>(sr. tech)
ever see things go obsolete like the drop of hat??
need list of all chips not gone. from earth , have it. its near endless.
no company in the world , can just wave a wand and have parts
not made now , magically , show up.

how ever if rich and want to fix a device that has street value of about $3 it can be fixed,, $300 labor.?
with hard work, finding legacy parts, only ebay has them.
parts not made now. or google for them. 1 by 1.
we do this all the time but not on $3 devices
(high end projection systems?)
now learn this, first find what is really broken and then lay blame
not throw mud lacking facts. and win.

the batteries are not in warranty and not one other part either.
this is what LEGACY is all about.

No lie i could fix it but you cant afford me or my tools.
sorry for the hard truth.

one other problem is the HP has no books with schematics
a tech needs those. to do the diagnosis.
its really just a toy, a throw away device.
if you went to ebay they can be had for $5 working, near free
less than a pack of CIGS.
why fix a $3 box when a $5 box works> ????

your laptop docking bay has quite a simple circuit, inside it is just connecting extenal base socket to connections to laptop.
All you have to do is rebuild connection using solderer and replacement cables.
Use a tester to find out what cable is not working. You put tester extremities on the two sides of the cable, if it returns infinite impadance, then contact is faulty, rebuild contact with a piece of wiring.

as the posters said, you can move any working HDD or SSD
be it old PATA or new SATA cables, using and adaptor.
google that see 1million examples.
to any PC, and backup data.
i reading your manual online, remove the hdd, carrier.
as it tell you on page 5.7
it shows the OLD OLD PATA cable.
now most PC made have no such port now
so we buy a HDD enclosure, and it convertes, PATA to USB
and now you can plug it in to any PC mADe and use it.

they are now obsolete.
there is no support on them now.
HP zero
no books
no schematics
they call that legacy stuff now, and everyone cringes at the thought.
why not ask HP actual
