Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Dropped HD about 6 inches

My WD My Book tipped over and fell about 6 inches but hit some stuff and the fall was pretty light. Now the light will come on but the hard drive isn't spinning up. Any chance this can be repaired at the Geek Squad or something?

Re: Dropped HD about 6 inches

Try oppening the case, and seeing in all of the cables are tightly attached, and if none of the boards inside are damaged, otherwise, you might have a problem.

I dropped (about 9 inches) my Maxtor 500Gb external HD

Hi John, yes you are right. Your hard-disk is damaged due to the fall. And although your computer won't find it you may still be able to recover some information from the drive.
If running Windows, plug-in your drive and check the taskbar to see if the safely remove icon comes up. if it does then try one of the following:
1. Install and use a good partition recovery software to recover your entire partition to a safe location. I personally use EASEUS partition recovery.
2. Use a file recovery software like R-Studio to try and recover individual files

Note that either of these processes will take a while, so be patient and make sure you have lots of free space on your computer or on another external drive.

I hope this helps, all the best

Dropped wd external drive & now not recognized by pc

Unfortunately hard drives damage extremely easily. Think of it as an old fashion record player. The needle (head) most likely damaged beyond normal repair. I had fail with less than 6 inches onto **** carpet. Sorry.

Dropped WD My Book 500GB

Sounds like the end. One thing I've tried, with some limited success, is to put the drive in a freezer for several hours. I've had the drives work for a little while; longer if I wrapped them in ice packs. This worked on drives that were working and stopped; I don't know about one that was dropped. Doesn't cost anything; worth a try. One thing; if it does work, get the files off right away. It never works for long.

WD5000 My Book 500 GB -- I/O error cannot access

i had exactly the same problem with a WD 500gb External HD MyBook Edition USB , eventually opened up the case removed the 500gb Caviar disk put it in an external HD Case (AC Ryan's AluBox)

Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional v6.20 retail first i run the simple in-depth diagnostics then i used the EasyRecovery DataRecovery option and after about an hour of scanning started copy-pasting all my files onto another disk ! this app saved my life a special thanks to its programmers ! im John from Greece , hope this helps bro!

How to open the case of a my book wd 320gb

See my response to someone else at the following link: . Not sure if the WD My Book you are trying to open is the same as a 500G. Mine has a black case, resembles a book and measures approx 7" high x 5 1/2" deep x 2 1/4" thick. I was able to open my WD My Book 500G drive but not w/o tearing up the rubber around the edge. Once I got it open, I discovered that there are tabs at the top and bottom of the case. The tabs are recessed w/i small rectangular holes and hard to see unless you look at it w/ a bright light. The tabs are located about 1 inch from the front edge of the drive on the top and bottom. It appears that you have to depress both tabs w/ flat tip screw drivers (or some other similar device) while pulling on the sides of the casing - you almost need three hands (maybe even more) while trying to get it open. The rubber around the edges fits tightly so it is extremely difficult to pull it apart w/ the rubber still in place. There must be some other trick to opening the case but I'm not sure what it might be. Not sure what you can do once you open it unless you have another drive that you can swap parts w/.

Good luck. Let me know if you figure out how to open the case w/o tearing up the rubber.

MyBook Fell Over, Now Not Showing As A Drive Letter

Well if your drive is 6 months old you might have a warranty of 1 year. You can make an online RMA request and tell them the drive doesn't work anymore. You don't have to say you dropped it. Just say it's heavily used and you can almost not live without.

But on the other hand if you tell the truth and want it fixed they can be reasonable and repair it for free. From my work and my private experience with WD they have good service. We sent alot of hdd's as RMA. For them is also good commercial if you tell other people about their service.

good luck. Just try to make a RMA. Nice drive by the way.
