Question about LG 42PX5D 42 in. Plasma HDTV

Grey shading on TV

The last couple of months I noticed that when the TV changes stations the right hand side keeps the images to some extent (ghost images) and leave the right hand side with an uneven grey image. Especially when watching a channel with a black background the right had side is totally grey.
I have read the manual and executed the steps to remove this (Whitewash) The result was negative. All the preventative steps were taken for e.g., no Still images, Cleaning and ventilation. The repair guys said that they could not detect any problems but obviously did not test this correctly. They stated that this could be my DSTV decoder? They stated that the Plasma’s motherboard is very complex. I personally think they don’t know how to fix this problem.

The TV still has 15 months of warranty left?

You expert advice would be appreciated.

Re: Grey shading on TV

If it's still under warranty call 800-243-0000 (LG customer service) and get them to send a technician out from a different shop. After 3 (or maybe it's on the 4th) repair attempts if it's not fixed you can ask for a different TV.

When I turn on the TV the right side of the screen starts ghosting and is blurry for about 40 minutes then it starts working perfect again for as long as its turned on being like this over a year any

First of all, try changing the input to some other like a DVD player and see whether you notice the same problem. If yes, the problem is in the input device. If no, there is some defect inside the TV like dry solder, leaky/dry/shorting capacitors etc. and this should be handled only by a qualified service technician.

My t.v. picture was coming i ghost shade why?

If you are using antennae check the direction. If this is a cable input , then with a DVD , if all these show a ghost image, then the convergence of the TV section must be checked. Possible fault in the picture processing -( Y amp luminance)can lead to ghost images.

TV turns on sound but no picture

Turn the tv on and get close to it and see if you can see ghost images. These will be normal images but will be very faint and look like shades of grey. You don;t want to do this in real bright direct light but a normal light or day light works. You can also hold a flashlight up near the edge and see if makes it easier to see.

If you can see an image and have normal sound then your problem is the back lighting system. This can be the lights bulbs or leds or the power supply for them. Repair cost should be under $150. I don't think you have any warranty left but check ASAP if you do as it may not last much longer.

If you have no picture and no sound then this is usually a problem with the receiver section. Can't suggest what cost would be as it can range from cheap to a bunch depending on what is wrong.

As always with any lcd tv or monitor make sure you know what a replacement is worth before you spend repair money. Repairs can sometimes cost close to what a new tv will.

50V500 ONLY
GHOST: May be described as "Out of Convergence" but ghost is still attached to main image.
A "ghost image" appearing to the left or right of images in the picture. Can be varying shades of a primary color (red, green, or blue) as well as gray. Can easily be seen in the 4 x 3 mode, at the edges of the picture.

To correct the problem, please do as follows:
  1. Access I2C Menu. (See page 57 of the Service Manual).
  1. To enter the I2C Service Menu, with power off, (on the front control panel) press and hold the INPUT button. Then press the POWER button for two seconds. The following Service Menu will appear.

  • Be sure to press SELECT after each change to SAVE the new Data.

  1. Using the Remote Control joy stick, scroll down to next page (see Figure 2) until LCD ADJUST is highlighted.
03b_ghost_image02.gif Figure 2
  1. Move the joy stick to the right to cursor right once. The next page will appear with the word GHOST highlighted.
  2. Cursor right again, and a white screen will appear with a BLACK SQUARE in the center, as in Figure 3. You will see LCD ADJUST, followed by “SHP” and a number (value).
Figure 3

  1. If the unit is out of adjustment, you will see a gray ghost on either side of the black square. Move the joystick to the right or to the left until the ghost disappears. The number values will change up or down.
    • If the ghost adjustment is off with a lower value, there will be a ghost to the left of the square.
    • If the ghost adjustment is off with a higher value, there will be a ghost to the right of the square.
  2. Once you get the square to look good without ghosts, press "SELECT" to save any data values that have been changed.
  3. Press the "EXIT" button three times to return to normal picture.
  4. Adjustment is completed
