Re: Horizontal lines

Horizontal blur can be caused by both a bad monitor or a bad video card/Card Slot on the motherboard.

The easiest way to check this is to connect the monitor to a known good system. If the problem follows the monitor to the good system, the monitor is bad and will need replacement. If it works fine on another system the problem is the video card/slot

Monitor problem

Appreciate the "Ask Me".

I am assuming that you have more than just familiarity with electronic components and circuitry, the use of a DVM and a soldering iron. Further, that you have access to a service manual.

Width problem is basically insufficient horizontal deflection, then analysis would have to be in the horizontal section. Areas to initially focus on:
  1. 12V line and pin 29 of IC401;
  2. 110 V peak to peak at collector of Q403, if yes check Q 402 & 404 as well as T401;
  3. other components that affect the horizontal size are:
  • IC201
  • Q 405, 406, 407 & 408;
  • D409
  • L401
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Does the monitor do this on all resolutions?

Try changing the refresh rate on the monitor's properties page and see if the effect changes at all.

Short, 3/8", horizontal blurs

I posted this answer on another "white streak" question, I suspect this is right:

This issue presents itself in different ways in this monitor, in the form of smeary video, or color changing from the left to right, or as you indicate, a smear following text. I know this as I own this monitor, and have repaired this myself. There are three 1 mf capacitors, surface mounted on the control board inside the monitor that fail. They are in the RGB input lines, and when they fail they cause distortion of the RGB signals, causing what you see. They are the three caps you will find in a row, spaced maybe 14mm on the board between the VGA connector and the processor chip. I would replace all three, observing polarity markings. You can get by just fine using old-style thru-hole caps, just form and clip the leads and solder 'em down on the surface-mount pads. I highly recommend proper soldering tools for this job though, especially for the removal of the old parts, they don't want to come off unless you can heat both pads at the same time.

Horizontal lines on my monitor

I have a similar problem with a 2 year old Samsung monitor. I have tried to make a screen dump of it, but the horizontal lines do not show up then. This I have read indicates that the problem is in the monitor and not the video card.

Thin pale Horizontal line

I tried this and it has worked temporarily by banging the monitor not great but it did work, no tech knowledge if there is any other advise please email.

Hiyama Monitor Model: Vision Master 17 (8617E Chassis)
Horizontal dark line across screen shadowing text or other complex display data - giving appearance of 3D grooves or just dark lines on light background - temp fix (few minutes) by banging monitor or jiggling the video cable (thats what threw me for a while)
Removed tube base board and ran over disc capacitors and other solder joints whether they looked dry or not. No re-occurence in 2 weeks of daily use. Seems to have fixed it. (Be prepared for a lot of metalwork and screw removal when opening one of these up - I still havn't figured out how to get the PSU/main board out of one !)

Philips monitor problem

Check that the pc to monitor vga lead is not loose at both ends, check your graphics drivers are upto date, although it could well be a monitor fault and replacment required, as don't think they are worth reparing these days
