Question about Canon FAXPHONE B640 Plain Paper Bubblejet

No ink After not printing from this machine for over a month, it would not print - even after running cleaning cycle several times, and trying to print transmission reports several times. I bought a new (real Canon) cartridge and installed it, and still could get no print at all. It runs the ink mixing/head cleaning cycle, but the test page is blank. I bought another new cartridge and tried again. I still get no print. The machine scans and sends faxes out just fine, but does not print. I tried making a copy of a printed page (since I know the scanner works), but the page came out blank. What do I do? If the ink supply is dried out somewhere near the head, preventing the ink from feeding, what can I do to clear this out? I do have access to a wide variety of solvents, so I can follow through on testing if someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks

    Excellent solution. It worked like a charm, and I ran just one cleaning cycle after using the soap solution and the cartridge's airhole. Count me as a believer.

    counterfeit ink cartridges message and it prints one page ok and the rest are blank.

Mater478.....did as you suggested, but the unit still told me to change the cartridge. I ordered a replacement a few minutes ago. I have another problem also. After cleaning the cartridge and reinstalling it the unit failed to reinitialize the cartridge assembly. This has happened since I tried to use the unit earlier this morning. I haven't used the B640 for about six months. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi i am a certified Canon repair tech for this fax. the problem that you are having is very common and has to do with two things. the cartridge and the purge/cleaning unit. what you can try is this open the printer and center the carridge unit and remove the cartridge. unplug the machine while it is still centered. on the right hand side you will see the purge unit. in the center of the purge unit is what looks like a retanglar pad. mix a water soap solution and apply to pad just soaking it. let it sit for a few minutes. take the ink cartridge and wipe the bottom of the cartridge with a damp soapy cloth. also if you look at the cartridge there is a little breating hole you can hold a cloth on the bottom and gently blow in that hole it will purge ink through the bottom of the cartridge. install the cartridge in the machine close the front door and replug in the power cord. you might still have to run a few cleaning cycles. hope this helps.

Power purge the machine:

Hold down the menu key. While still holding the menu key, unplug the machine and plug it back in. Do not let go of the key until the machine reboots and the screen says "maintenence". Hit the following keys: 7, 6, 4,black start. The machine will then go into "power purge" or deep clean mode for about 5-7 minutes. When complete hit: 99 to get out of maintanence and reboot. Be sure to have extra ink cartidges on hand as it does use up a lot of ink but this process works the best every time when the printer wont print

All colors print except the Magenta. I have run the cleaning several times to no avail. The print quality check shows black yellow and blue, not even a hint of red. I hane replaced the Magenta cartridge.


It's really hard to say without knowing a bit more.
When and how did this happen?
Did you keep the machine idle, without using it for some time?
Lack of regular use causes the jets to clog up because of dry or drying ink.
Did you try refilling the cartridge?
Not all ink is universally suited.
Are the contacts clean and unobstructed?

First of all, don't waste any more ink running the cleaning cycle. It's rarely of any use when the condition is this bad.
There is a cleaning kit available with a special cleaning solution and it has never failed for me. It's cheaper than a new ink cartridge. :)

The catch is that, you will need a used ink cartridge and you will need to put some of this solution where the ink was. Then run the cleaning cycle or even try to print.
You'll get all the little accessories, like a tiny drill bit, some syringes and a bottle of clear solution.
The included instructions are not hard to follow.

I suppose the worst case scenario will require a trip to the service depot.

Full of ink won't print


In the properties of the printer in Windows you will have a tab called maintenance. There you can select "cleaning" and "deep cleaning". You will want to run through those cycles several times and if the ink is still not coming through so you can print, you should let the full ink cartridge sit for about 20 minutes after that cleaning and then try again. With refilled ink cartridges this can be a game of patience. The alternative is to buy a new ink cartridge, but everyone knows those are costly. If the printer won't even "try" to print because the ink is low, press the "color" button to proceed after the alert.

MFC-790CW; will not print the black color..


You probably have a plugged print head or the black ink feed is plugged.
Depending on how bad it is you may find it easier or even cheaper to replace the printer.

If this is a ink caused problem you stand a chance of fixing it if you are patient but you might go through half an ink cartridge to get it working, If it is stubborn it can take 20 or 30 cleaning cycles before you see any black. You can try using household vinegar (dissolves the dried ink) on a qtip or lint free paper towel to try to clean the print head. To do this you remove the ink cartridge and very gently rub the towel with the vinegar on the print head. This might require you to move the print head to one side so you can see the actual print area (where the ink comes out). Keep doing this until the towel starts to come clean ie not as much ink coming off. Then run a few print cycles and if this works your printer will print as good as the first day you had it.

The next stage would require filling a old clean ink cartridge with vinegar and running cleaning cycles. Usually can be pretty messy and you should rethink buying a new printer but will really clean things out.

It is also possible that the print head has picked up clay or paper lint from the paper and this has hardened like a cement. That means replacement.

The machine prints documents when using the print


When not used for any length of time, ink jet printer print heads will clog with dry ink. You can try to manually clean the printhead with a cloth moistened with water or maybe alcohol until you get some ink on the cloth. Then reinstall and run cleaning cycle. If unsuccessful, new cartridges are needed.

  • If the print head has become clogged and the printer's head-cleaning cycle won't help (run it 10 times if you have to) you could try these things:
    • Soak the print head in hot water then leave it overnight, then try it again
    • If you have access to an ultrasonic cleaner that will take the printhead, use that. (These are used by jewellers and other people which have to clean small, intricate parts)
    • Buy some Isopropyl Alcohol and soak the printhead in that overnight. (You can get it from the chemist)
    • Use a Mr Cuppacino (or your Espresso machine). It's a small kitchen appliance which creates a jet of steam for frothing milk for making a cappuccino. You can use the jet of steam to blast the print head. But be careful that you don't melt things -- short, sharp jets only.
    • Each time you try a cleaning method, use a damp paper towel to gently wipe and dry the print head area.
    • Put a teaspoon of water in the bottom of the empty cartridge and try the cleaning cycle a few times.

    Try replacing the cartridge. Sometimes they do get clogged and won't clear no matter how many cleaning cycles you run.

    MFC440CN PRINTING - ALL BLACK


    I understand that the machine is printing only in BK. You have lost color.

    If so, do run the cleaning cycles several times and run quality check test prints after each cycle.

    There should be color again.

    Otherwise the ph is defective!
