My Sony Vaio VGN-CS320J, which I bought 4 months ago, is making an intermittent buzzing sound. The buzzing seems to accompany the fan when it comes on. The fan has always been loud, but it has never buzzed until recently. It used to only make a clear airy noise, but the sound has changed drastically to an unpredictable buzz. Nothing noticeable has happened to trigger the problem.

What version or Windows are you running? Try booting with your Windows disc and select repair. Get to a DOS prompt and overwrite the file with the same name file from the CD. The file may also be located in whatever drive letter the system assigns your repair CD. (Usually X I think).
From thedetails thatyou giveit seems thatthe problem isthe fan, itdoes not work well.
What you cando is to checkif there is some dust accumulation by watching from the holeswherethe hot airshould come out(usuallyon the sidesof the laptop). Then you can usea can ofcompressed air toclean itbetter anda vacuum cleaner, but not toopowerful,to **** upthe remainingdust accumulation.
After this, evenif itdoes not work, you'll mightcontact the Sony support.
You'd better open up the laptop and do a thorough cleanup, and do the cleanup each 3 months. While you're at it, get a lubricant for cleaning up and degreasing electronic contacts and spray a bit of it in the electric motor of the fan. These cans are cheap and you can probably find it in your local supermarket or electronic repair shop. This buzzing noise may be caused by a dust clog, or a dried out spindle axis. The thorough cleanup and lubrication will help. I've done this countless times on many laptop models. The other option is buying a new fan, which can sometimes cost up to $50, so better do the cleanup. Its free :)
The VGN-CS1xx, VGN-CS2xx, VGN-CS3xx computer models have a known issue that the cooling fan in the Computer may make continuous scraping, whirring, chriping and/or clicking noise while running. As a part of Sony's commitment to quality, Sony provides a free repair for an additional 36 months beyond the standard limited 12 month warranty (48 months total) for fan replacement.
As you're experiencing the issue, you can contact Sony Support at 1-888-476-6972 to set up a repair service at our Sony repair facility.

Usually Sound from Notebook are from CPU cooling fan and from Hard drive.
But It's hardly occur in the case of Hard drive.we called it Hard drive failure and the only solution for this is new replacement.
Your problem could be CPU cooling fan not working properly. Open the Notebook ( it will be easy if you refer to manual on how to open) and start the system now, you will be able to pinpoint what causes the sound.
Clean the CPU cooling fan with an air blower and re-check if the problem still persists.
If OK,then close the Notebook otherwise replace the CPU Cooling fan with a new one.
The sony VGN-S460 seems to have an inherent problem with their cpu fans. It is apparent that the fan uses a ball bearing system which over time becomes worn and causes the grinding sound.
The only solution is to replace the entire fan assembly as they are inseparable.
Hi:
Not sure of a user cause for the fan to run full speed, unless you are using the laptop in a high heat environment, or setting it on a bed or other area where it is not getting adequet cooling air. If it does it right away, when you turn it on , cold, then there might be a laptop hardware problem. If you leave your laptop on all the time, then you might be inducing the problem. I had a HP high performance laptop, that the fans would not turn on at all till it ran an hour or so, then they would stay on loud for 10 or 15 minutes, then shut off, then cycle.
