We have had our 65in Sharp for over two years and noticed some flashing after the TV had been on awhile so we replaced the bulb. NOW we have a non-stop buzzing noise!

I have the same problem. If finally quit ... and so did the TV. It no longer powers up. The green and red indicator lights just blink. No picture. No sound. What's up?

  • Anonymous Apr 01, 2008

I have the same problem. Just replaced lamp, powers up, good for 30 mins, then quit ... wait 5 mins it powers on again, then good for 3 mins, picture starts to flashing, then quit again... you can hear the humming sound become unstable, just like keep pushing and releasing gas when you ride a bike... Believe the light engine is broken... anyone knows how to fix this?

yes, we have the same problem

    Same problem...what do we do?

  • Anonymous Jun 03, 2008

I have a Sharp 65DR650...I got screwed on a trade and didn't do my homework. After calling Sharp I was directed to Anrews Electronics (800-274-4666) in Ca. I spoke with a nice representative who informed me that the "Optical Engine" (what you need to buy because the Color Wheel itself is not available alone) is just over $1250!!!! To make matters worse, there is a core charge of $1480, which you are charged at the time of purchase....when you ship your rebuildable core back to them you get refunded the $1480. So basically, with the Service Manual ($37) and the upfront costs on the equipment you are looking at close to $3000 out of pocket.....and that's if you put the unit in yourself!!!!!!

I also read somewhere online a guy who remved and rebuilt his own color wheel using a similar models shaft/bearing assy. Sounds tricky, but if it can be done I will try. If anyone has any info on this process PLEASE let me know!!!

Loud humming started months ago. Now a loud groaning and flashes of color. TV is almost 2 yrs old from Costco. I'm debating whether or not to get a new one.

  • edjung1000 Dec 23, 2008

Also bought from costco.com about 2 years ago. TV always had a louder fan than other sets, but today a new loud humming sound immediately comes on when the set is powered up. If a $1500 repair is in order, then I'm bringing it back to costco since it was purchased before they revamped their return policy.

  • nothappy_23 Jan 15, 2009

Same problem. Bought this TV from Costco.com and have the same loud noise when turned on and loud cracking sounds after turned off. Now, getting flashes of light after about 30 minutes on. We expedited a $200.00 lamp to the house yesterday and IT"S NOT THE LAMP!!! UGH! We'll be going to COSTCO tomorrow to see what they can do to make this right. Really disappointed after spending $3000.00 on it!

I am having the same problem. Any help out there?

  • edjung1000 May 11, 2010

Update on my earlier post: I contacted Sharp about the problem - they said "don't believe everything you read on the Internet" and gave me the number of my local service shop. I called them and they said these TVs failed like this all the time. The part was $1142 plus a few hundred more for labor. They said that in the past Sharp has offered to cover the cost of the part for some people. I called Sharp back and they said there was nothing they would offer me. So we are SOL.

I have a Sharp 65DR650 with the classic color wheel issue.

I was able to clean and lubricate my color wheel and now it works great.

Check this out.

    This really does work!!

    Thanks

You will find out that cleaning it will not solve the problem. You can only make it worse. We have tried that few times already :( You can find an update version of the color wheel that will not become bad at ted_ge@yahoo.com

Looks like we all got screwed with this TV. Mine just started after 2 years and now it's getting louder. I think I rather call my lawyer than Tech. This product is NOT build properly and someone should let the company know about it.

    Hi,

You do not have to replace the light engine ($1000+labor). All you have to do is replace the color wheel. You can find those from a private party by emailing ted_ge@yahoo.com

MY 65DR650 REAR PROJECTION TV WILL NOT COME ON. IT MAKES A HUMMING SOUND LIKE A JET BUT WILL NOT COME ON I HAD A TV REPAIRMAN LOOK AT IT AND HE SAID THE COLOR WHEEL IS GOING OUT AND NOW 3 WEEKS LATER IT...

If you are comfortable - you can try taking the color wheel out of the tv. Pop the motor apart and clean all the residue on the bearing/spindle. Then lubricate and put it back together. Search on google for how to do this.

There is a company that replaces the motor. Search on ebay for them.

Ballast Lamp provide back light in DLP TV and if its bad / broken TV wont power up. If lamp is weak, dark or less bright picture will come in screen. Color wheel is responsible for colors in picture and if its broke, TV wont power up and common problem with color wheel is high pitch noise while it spins.

65dr650 color wheel

It is in case next to the lamp. Its thin cable sticks out from the case. You will to open the back panel of the TV, check for cables, remove screws for the base on the right, then pull out the base out. You will have to be very careful removing screws and gentle when replace the color wheel. Hope this helps.
