Clicking and blinking red/yellow light

I rearranged my wife's office. Unplugged everything, moved everything, plugged it all back in, and the hard drive won't turn on. Just this clicking noise with a blinking red/yellow light when I turn the LaCie on. What's going on???

Re: Clicking and blinking red/yellow light

Few days ago a friend of mine said that his external hard (320G Lacie with F.A.Porsche design) doesn't work anymore. When he push the power button the hard disk's motor doesn't spin up but only clicking and the LED blinking red/yellow instead shine steadily.
First of all I opened the case and took the hard disk itself. Put it in a computer like an internal disk and checked it with the program MHDD. There were no bad sectors on it so I put it again in the case but powered the disk not though the external supply and trough the PC suplly. This way when I turned on the power the disk's motor span up and when plugged the USB connector to the computer the operating system detected it and mounted it without any problems.
So I checked the values of the voltages comming from the power supply. They have to be +12V and +5V. The +5V was OK, but the other was varied from 11,2V to 11,6V. Carefully opened the power supply block and the problem was clarificationed - the two filtering capacitors for +12V were bloated. Changing them wiped out the problem and now the hard disk is working without any problems.
So keep in mind that the problems may be quite elementary.
Greetings, Yasen!
P.S.: Sorry for the bad English ;)

Backup Plus Potable 500 GB Light Blinking and disk not being read I've got a Seagate 500 GB backup plus external hard disk which is about 2 months old. The hard disk has started to make a slight clicking...

The clicking could be a symptom of imminent failure of the hard drive . Back up all information from this drive as soon as possible. It may be something that a program such as checkdisk can fix but be sure to backup drive before attempting any fixes just to be safe. Hope this helps.

Hi there, I'm using a WD drive with a Macintosh. It accidently became unplugged, or partially so, when my young son brushed up against the plug. Since then it won't mount and there white light on...

Ouch. The blinking light is bad. But try this:

1. Run the WD discover tool
2. Go to "configure" and acknowledge there is a blinking light. This might give you access to the data and drives.
3. If the status says "good" then everything is fine. If not, then you probably have a bad drive and need to contact WD tech support. Hopefully you still have a warranty for it if this is the case.

Let me know if this works!

I have a clicking noise coming from my hard drive, and now nothing happens when i plug in just clicking and light lost and scarred i have everything on that...whats wrong?

The cause of this clicking sound is the arm of the hard drive platter moving as far as it can to the right, in a pattern or randomly. If this write head touches the platter of the hard drive and scratches it, all the data that is stored on that portion will be erased and be unwritable. The hard drive repeatedly attempts to recalibrate the write head, causing the abrupt clicking noises. In most of these cases, the problem is caused by a manufacture defect or physical abuse of the hard drive itself.Unfortunately this is a sign that its worn out also.

Windows cannot detect (find) the netcenter. blinking light. makes 4 clicking noises when started.

the clicking noise is the reader arm jumping across platters on your hard drive you have a dirty hard remove the hard drive then give the hard drive a firm tap on the side to free the reader arm
all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or
if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again, sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems
hope this helps

I have a WD1600 Extrernal Harddrive and yesterday my kids unplugged the outlet so everything powered down instantly. Once I plugged everything back p and restarted my computer the harddrive just spins up...

The hard drive could have been irreparably damaged. The chattering sound is the heads trying to find the beginning of the data sectors and can't. The drive will shut itself off automatically after a predetermined time period.

Will reinstalling Netowrk Drive (E.B.Disk) delete everything on

Wait.. If you have this hard drive it should be connected using network adapter right? you make it sound like it is connected through USB. Reinstalling the driver on your pc is not a bad idea and it will remove the hard drive files. I suggest go to another pc and search from there. Also, find out the network ip address of that hard drive. If it is plugged in to the network switch then it would be easy for you to access the files even without installing the drivers.
accessing the drives and shared folder:
start-> run and type in \\harddriveIP\sharedfolder

if you don't know the ip use the software lookatlan to search for it.

Worked fine for a year, now not recognized or functioning

I had the same issue- light was blinking from red to blue, could not get my computers (I have a Mac and a PC) to recognize the drive, sounded like the drive wasn't powering up...

I replaced the Acom drive enclosure with a new one (CP Technologies). I don't know if the drive enclosure or power supply was at fault-- but it wasn't the internal drive. Plugged it in and amazingly all my data was back. For thirty bucks it was far less than sending out the drive to a 'data recovery' expert!
