The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:

Hi,IF I were you I will search the eBay for a same lens as " parts only " which means lens does not work but you can use the some parts of it ..There are a lot on ebay..one example is below URL..pls visit both..
Brand name services always do this..Since you were doing unauthorized repair ,they do not like it..
Hope this helps! Take care and please Remember to rate/vote and

The lense has jammed and/or failed.
Could be jammed and you may be able to blow out some of the dust with an air can.
But chances are you need a new lense assembly. They can be found for as little as $30, but replacement is a rather complex procedure - with many pitfalls. But if you're venturous and willing to gamble $30+, it could make an excellent learning opportunity.
The lowest repair-shop quote I ever found was $75 in labor alone.
Guess I'm in the wrong business. ;-)

If you're wondering; yes, I was able to repair mine. Essentially it's a matter of taking it apart untill you have the lense out; remembering where it all went; and putting it back together -- In some extremely tight quarters...

Let's hope the air can works!

Good luck!

Have you actually cleaned the contacts or are you just looking at them and they "look" clean? Clean them with a cotton swab lightly dampened in rubbing alcohol.

I would check to see if the lenses work on another Nikon digital camera.Double check the A/M mode switch on both. Does it feels solid or mushy when you flip it back and forth?

I will say that both lenses use the same auto-focus gear assembly which can fail over time. Nikon only sells the assembly as a unit, so even if one of the small gears is broken or damaged, the whole thing gets replaced. You cab send them to Nikon or a trip your local camera store may be in order.

Error message in D 90 camera

I had the same problem (same kit). I even exchanged the kit for a new one, and had the same issue. I'm convinced it's the connection between the camera and the lense - when I wiggled the lense, it would sometimes return to normal. I considered cleaning the contact points, but then the problem went away. I've been shooting hundreds of times, without it happening once.

Droped Nikon COOLPIX S10, after the lense would not focus.

WITH THE CAMERA YOU HAVE , IT IS BEST TO GET ANOTHER ONE BECAUSE THE LABOR AND PARTS EXCEED THE VALUE OF THE CAMERA .
tHE NEW CAMERAS ARE OLD WITH BETTER FEATURES AND EVEN LESS MONEY .
THE LENSE BARREL ASSEMBLY IS PRETTY EXPENSIVE .

You most likely need the shutter replaced. I see them frequently. Not something you want to try yourself, as it is an in depth repair.
